The value of deeds is based on the intentions behind them

bukhari:1al-Ḥumaydī ʿAbdullāh b. al-Zubayr > Sufyān > Yaḥyá b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī > Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Taymī > ʿAlqamah b. Waqqāṣ al-Laythī > ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ

I heard ˹ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ˺ on the minbar (pulpit) and he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Deeds are ˹judged based˺ upon ˹their˺ intentions, and every person ˹is granted the due˺ for what they intended. So whoever had emigrated for ˹the sake of˺ worldly benefits or for ˹the sake of˺ marrying a woman, then the ˹due˺ of his emigration ˹is earned for˺ or what he emigrated for."

Permissibility to speak about someone's character for marriage or giving council

muslim:1480pAbū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah > Wakīʿ > Sufyān > Abū Bakr b. Abū al-Jahm b. Ṣukhayr al-ʿAdawī > Fāṭimah b. Qays

I heard Fatimah b. Qays say that her husband divorced her three times, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not grant her accommodation or maintenance. She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me, 'When you have completed your waiting period, inform me.' So I informed him.

Then Muawiyah, Abu Jahm, and Usamah b. Zayd proposed to marry her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "As for Muawiyah, he is a poor man with no wealth. As for Abu Jahm, he is a man who habitually beats women. But ˹marry˺ Usamah b. Zayd!" She gestured with her hand like this, indicating Usamah ˹is like this and˺ Usamah ˹is like that˺. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told her: "Obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger is better for you." She said: So I married him, and I was pleased."
