Whenever a meal was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would ask whether it was a gift or Sadaqa (something given in charity). If he was told that it was Sadaqa, he would tell his companions to eat it, but if it was a gift, he would hurry to share it with them.

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا أُتِيَ بِطَعَامٍ سَأَلَ عَنْهُ أَهَدِيَّةٌ أَمْ صَدَقَةٌ فَإِنْ قِيلَ صَدَقَةٌ قَالَ لأَصْحَابِهِ كُلُوا وَلَمْ يَأْكُلْ وَإِنْ قِيلَ هَدِيَّةٌ ضَرَبَ بِيَدِهِ ﷺ فَأَكَلَ مَعَهُمْ

Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was presented with food, he asked about it, If he was told that it was a gift, he ate out of that, and if he was told that it was a sadaqa he did not eat out of that.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا أُتِيَ بِطَعَامٍ سَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَإِنْ قِيلَ هَدِيَّةٌ أَكَلَ مِنْهَا وَإِنْ قِيلَ صَدَقَةٌ لَمْ يَأْكُلْ مِنْهَا

"If something was brought to him, the prophet would ask whether it was a gift or charity. If it was said that if was charity, he would not eat, and if it was said that it was a gift, he would stretch forth his hand."

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا أُتِيَ بِشَىْءٍ سَأَلَ عَنْهُ أَهَدِيَّةٌ أَمْ صَدَقَةٌ فَإِنْ قِيلَ صَدَقَةٌ لَمْ يَأْكُلْ وَإِنْ قِيلَ هَدِيَّةٌ بَسَطَ يَدَهُ

[AI] I heard Abu Hurairah say that when the Prophet ﷺ was presented with food from someone other than his household, he would ask about it. If it was said to be a gift, he would eat it, and if it was said to be a charity, he would say, "Eat it," and he would not eat it himself.

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا أُتِيَ بِطَعَامٍ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَهْلِهِ سَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَإِنْ قِيلَ هَدِيَّةٌ أَكَلَ وَإِنْ قِيلَ صَدَقَةٌ قَالَ كُلُوا وَلَمْ يَأْكُلْ

[AI] The translation of the passage is as follows: "When the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was brought food from someone other than his household, he would ask about it. If he was told it was a gift, he would eat it. But if he was told it was charity, he would say, 'Eat it,' and he would not eat it himself."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا أُتِيَ بِطَعَامٍ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَهْلِهِ سَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَإِنْ قِيلَ هَدِيَّةٌ أَكَلَ وَإِنْ قِيلَ صَدَقَةٌ قَالَ كُلُوا وَلَمْ يَأْكُلْ

[AI] I heard Abu Huraira say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to ask about food brought from outside of his household. If it was said to him that it was a gift, he would eat it. But if it was said to him that it was charity, he would say, "Eat," and he wouldn't eat it.

سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا أُتِيَ بِطَعَامٍ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَهْلِهِ يَسْأَلُ عَنْهُ فَإِنْ قِيلَ لَهُ هَدِيَّةٌ أَكَلَ وَإِنْ قِيلَ صَدَقَةٌ قَالَ كُلُوا وَلَمْ يَأْكُلْ

[AI] Abu Huraira said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "When food that does not belong to his family is brought to him, he would ask about it. If he was told that it was a gift, he would eat it. And if he was told that it was charity, he would say, 'Eat and do not eat.'"

قَالَسَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا أُتِيَ بِطَعَامٍ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَهْلِهِ سَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَإِنْ قِيلَ هَدِيَّةٌ أَكَلَ وَإِنْ قِيلَ صَدَقَةٌ قَالَ كُلُوا وَلَمْ يَأْكُلْ
