[Machine] The Christians used to fast during the month of Ramadan, so a king was appointed over them. He fell ill and said, "If God heals me, I will add ten more days of fasting." Then another king was appointed after him, and he ate meat and became sick. He said, "If God heals me, I will add eight more days of fasting." Then another king was appointed after him, and he said, "We will not abandon these days but will complete them and observe our fasting in the spring." So he did, and it became fifty days.  

كَانَ عَلَى النَّصَارَى صَوْمُ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فَكَانَ عَلَيْهِمْ مَلِكٌ فَمَرِضَ فَقَالَ لَئِنْ شَفَاهُ اللهُ لَيَزِيدَنَّ عَشْرًا ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَيْهِمْ مَلِكٌ بَعْدَهُ فَأَكَلَ اللَّحْمَ فَوَجِعَ فَقَالَ لَئِنْ شَفَاهُ اللهُ لَيَزِيدَنَّ ثَمَانِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ ثُمَّ كَانَ مَلِكٌ بَعْدَهُ فَقَالَ مَا نَدَعُ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأَيَّامِ أَنْ نُتِمَّهَا وَنَجْعَلُ صَوْمَنَا فِي الرَّبِيعِ فَفَعَلَ فَصَارَتْ خَمْسِينَ يَوْمًا  

[Machine] He asked the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , saying, "O Messenger of Allah, we live in a cold country and we drink a drink that gives us strength." The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said to him, "Does it intoxicate?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Then do not approach it." Then he asked him the same question again, to which he responded, "Does it intoxicate?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Then do not approach it." He said, "They will not be able to abstain from it." He said, "Whoever cannot abstain from it, then kill him."  

أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّا بِبَلَدٍ بَارِدٍ وَإِنَّا نَشْرَبُ شَرَابًا نَتَقَوَّى بِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «فَهَلْ يُسْكِرُ؟» قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَلَا تَقْرَبُوهُ» ثُمَّ أَعَادَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَسْأَلَةَ فَقَالَ ﷺ «يُسْكِرُ؟» فَقَالَ نَعَمْ فَقَالَ «لَا تَقْرَبُوهُ» قَالَ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَنْ يَصْبِرُوا عَنْهُ قَالَ «فَمَنْ لَمْ يَصْبِرْ عَنْهُ فَاقْتُلُوهُ»  

I asked the Prophet ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah! we live in a cold land in which we do heavy work and we make a liquor from wheat to get strength from if for our work and to stand the cold of our country. He asked: Is it intoxicating? I replied: Yes. He said: You must avoid it. I said: The people will not abandon it. He said: If they do not abandon it, fight with them. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3683)   

سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ شَرَابًا مِنْ هَذَا الْقَمْحِ نَتَقَوَّى بِهِ عَلَى أَعْمَالِنَا وَعَلَى بَرْدِ بِلَادِنَا قَالَ «هَلْ يُسْكِرْ؟» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ» ثُمَّ جِئْتُهُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ «هَلْ يُسْكِرُ» قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ» قُلْتُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ غَيْرُ تَارِكِيهِ قَالَ «فَإِنْ لَمْ يَتْرُكُوهُ فَاقْتُلُوهُمْ»
