"عَنْ أنَسٍ قَالَ: كانَت الصَّلاَةُ إِذَا حَضَرَتْ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ سَعَى رَجُلٌ فِى الطَّرِيقِ فَنَادَى: الصَّلاَةَ الصَّلاَةَ، فَاشْتَدَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالُوا: لَوْ اتَّخَذْنَا نَاقُوسًا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّصَارَى، فَقَالُوا: لَوْ اتَّخَذْنَا بُوقًا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ ذَلِكَ لليَهُودِ، فَقَالُوا: لَوْ رَفَعْنَا نَارًا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَلِكَ لِلمجُوسِ، فَأمرَ بِلاَلًا أنْ يَشفعَ الأذَانَ وَأنْ يُوتِرَ الإِقَامَةَ".

[Machine] When prayer time arrived during the era of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, a man hurried on the road and called out, "Prayer, prayer!" This caused a commotion among the people, so they said, "If only we had a bell, O Messenger of Allah!" He replied, "That is for Christians." They then said, "If only we had a horn." He replied, "That is for Jews." So Bilal was commanded to give the call to prayer and give the call for the start of prayer.
