Ali’s hope for reconciliation with Talhah

[AI] that he said to Musa b. Talhah b. Ubaydullah: By Allah, I hope that I and your father are among those of whom Allah ﷻ said: "And We will remove whatever rancor is in their breasts; brothers, upon couches, facing one another."

A man from Hamadan said: Allah is more just than that. Ali shouted at him and said: Then who, then, if we are not those people?

السيوطي:٤-٦٧١ب – عن على:

أنه قال لموسى بن طلحة بن عبيد الله: وَالله إِنِّى لأرْجُو أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنا وَأَبُوكَ مِمَّنْ قَالَ اللهُ: ﴿وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِمْ مِنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَانًا عَلَى سُرُرٍ مُتَقَابِلِينَ﴾.

فَقَاَل رَجُلٌ مِنْ هَمَدَانَ: الله أَعْدَلُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ، فَصَاحَ عَلِىٌّ عَلَيْه صَيْحَةً وَقَالَ: فَمَنْ إِذَنْ إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ نَحنُ أُولَئِكَ؟

A man from Hamdan said, "Indeed, Allah is more just than that." Upon hearing this, Ali let out a cry that could be heard throughout the palace. He said, "Then who are we if we are not those mentioned in the verse?" This narration is authentic and has not been narrated by anyone else.

الحاكم:٣٣٤٨ – حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ الْفَقِيهُ إِمْلَاءً ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ نَصْرٍ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا أَبَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَجَلِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي نُعَيْمُ بْنُ أَبِي هِنْدٍ حَدَّثَنِي رِبْعِيُّ بْنُ حِرَاشٍ قَالَ إِنِّي لَعِنْدَ عَلِيٍّ جَالِسٌ إِذْ جَاءَ ابْنٌ لِطَلْحَةَ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَى عَلِيٍّ فَرَحَّبَ بِهِ فَقَالَ
