That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Jibra'il had indeed descended upon him to say to him: "Tell them - meaning your Companions - to choose regarding the captives of Badr, between either killing them or ransoming the, so that the amount killed by them will correspond similarly to them." So they said: "Ranson, even though some of us may be killed." There are narrations on this topic from Ibn Mas'ud, Anas, Abu Barzah, and Jubair bin Mut'im.
[AI] "Gabrielﷺ descended upon him ﷺ and said to him: 'Inform his companions ﷺ about the captives and give them the choice of either killing them or accepting ransom for their release. However, they will have to wait until the following year to decide their fate.'" They replied, 'We prefer accepting the ransom and allowing some of us to be killed.'"
[AI] Jibreel came to the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Badr and said, "Give your companions the choice regarding the prisoners. If they wish, they can demand ransom, and if they wish, they can put them to death. If you agree to accept ransom, a number of them would be set free." The Prophet's companions said, "We will not agree to ransom. We will put them to death instead." (Narrated by Mahmoud ibn Ghailan, from Abu Dawud Al-Haffari)
