The Prophet ﷺ sent a Sariya under the command of a man from the Ansar and ordered the soldiers to obey him. He (i.e. the commander) became angry and said "Didn't the Prophet ﷺ order you to obey me!" They replied, "Yes." He said, "Collect fire-wood for me." So they collected it. He said, "Make a fire." When they made it, he said, "Enter it (i.e. the fire)." So they intended to do that and started holding each other and saying, "We run towards (i.e. take refuge with) the Prophet ﷺ from the fire." They kept on saying that till the fire was extinguished and the anger of the commander abated. When that news reached the Prophet ﷺ he said, "If they had entered it (i.e. the fire), they would not have come out of it till the Day of Resurrection. Obedience (to somebody) is required when he enjoins what is good."

بَعَثَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ سَرِيَّةً فَاسْتَعْمَلَ رَجُلاً مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ وَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يُطِيعُوهُ فَغَضِبَ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ أَمَرَكُمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ تُطِيعُونِي قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ فَاجْمَعُوا لِي حَطَبًا فَجَمَعُوا فَقَالَ أَوْقِدُوا نَارًا فَأَوْقَدُوهَا فَقَالَ ادْخُلُوهَا فَهَمُّوا وَجَعَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ يُمْسِكُ بَعْضًا وَيَقُولُونَ فَرَرْنَا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِنَ النَّارِ فَمَا زَالُوا حَتَّى خَمَدَتِ النَّارُ فَسَكَنَ غَضَبُهُ فَبَلَغَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَوْ دَخَلُوهَا مَا خَرَجُوا مِنْهَا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ الطَّاعَةُ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ

The Prophet ﷺ sent an army unit (for some campaign) and appointed a man from the Ansar as its commander and ordered them (the soldiers) to obey him. (During the campaign) he became angry with them and said, "Didn't the Prophet ﷺ order you to obey me?" They said, "Yes." He said, "I order you to collect wood and make a fire and then throw yourselves into it." So they collected wood and made a fire, but when they were about to throw themselves into, it they started looking at each other, and some of them said, "We followed the Prophet ﷺ to escape from the fire. How should we enter it now?" So while they were in that state, the fire extinguished and their commander's anger abated. The event was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ and he said, "If they had entered it (the fire) they would never have come out of it, for obedience is required only in what is good." (See Hadith No. 629. بَعَثَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ سَرِيَّةً وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَجُلاً مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ وَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يُطِيعُوهُ فَغَضِبَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ أَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنَّ تُطِيعُونِي قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ عَزَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ لَمَا جَمَعْتُمْ حَطَبًا وَأَوْقَدْتُمْ نَارًا ثُمَّ دَخَلْتُمْ فِيهَا فَجَمَعُوا حَطَبًا فَأَوْقَدُوا فَلَمَّا هَمُّوا بِالدُّخُولِ فَقَامَ يَنْظُرُ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ قَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِنَّمَا تَبِعْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فِرَارًا مِنَ النَّارِ أَفَنَدْخُلُهَا فَبَيْنَمَا هُمْ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ خَمَدَتِ النَّارُ وَسَكَنَ غَضَبُهُ فَذُكِرَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَوْ دَخَلُوهَا مَا خَرَجُوا مِنْهَا أَبَدًا إِنَّمَا الطَّاعَةُ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ

The Mersenger of Allah ﷺ sent an expeditionand appointed over the Mujahids a man from the Ansar. (While making the appointment), he ordered that his work should be listened to and obeyed. They made him angry in a matter. He said: Collect for me dry wood. They collected it for him. Then he said: Kindle a fire. They kindled (the fire). Then he said: Didn't the Messenger of Allah ﷺ order you to listen to me and obey (my orders)? They said: Yes. He said: Enter the fire. The narrator says: (At this), they began to look at one another and said: We fled from the fire to (find refuge with) the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (and now you order us to enter it). They stood quiet until his anger cooled down and the fire went out. When they returned, they related the incident to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: If they had entered it, they would not have come out. Obedience (to the commander) is obligatory only in what is good.

بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَرِيَّةً وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَجُلاً مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ وَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يَسْمَعُوا لَهُ وَيُطِيعُوا فَأَغْضَبُوهُ فِي شَىْءٍ فَقَالَ اجْمَعُوا لِي حَطَبًا فَجَمَعُوا لَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَوْقِدُوا نَارًا فَأَوْقَدُوا ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَمْ يَأْمُرْكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ تَسْمَعُوا لِي وَتُطِيعُوا قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ فَادْخُلُوهَا قَالَ فَنَظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ فَقَالُوا إِنَّمَا فَرَرْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ النَّارِ فَكَانُوا كَذَلِكَ وَسَكَنَ غَضَبُهُ وَطُفِئَتِ النَّارُ فَلَمَّا رَجَعُوا ذَكَرُوا ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَوْ دَخَلُوهَا مَا خَرَجُوا مِنْهَا إِنَّمَا الطَّاعَةُ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out an expedition and appointed a man of the Ansar to lead it. When they went out, he (the man in charge) got upset with them for some reason and said to them: Didnʿt the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instruct you to obey me? They said: Yes. He said: Bring firewood Then he called for fire and lit it, then he said: I insist that you enter it. The people thought of entering it, but then a young man among them said: You fled to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the Fire; do not rush (to enter it) until you meet the Prophet ﷺ, then if he orders you to enter it, enter it. They went back to the Prophet ﷺ and told him about that. He said to them: “If you had entered it you would never have come out of it; obedience is only with regard to that which is right and proper.”

بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ سَرِيَّةً وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ قَالَ فَلَمَّا خَرَجُوا قَالَ وَجَدَ عَلَيْهِمْ فِي شَيْءٍ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ أَمَرَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ تُطِيعُونِي؟ قَالَ قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ فَقَالَ اجْمَعُوا حَطَبًا ثُمَّ دَعَا بِنَارٍ فَأَضْرَمَهَا فِيهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ عَزَمْتُعَلَيْكُمْ لَتَدْخُلُنَّهَا قَالَ فَهَمَّ الْقَوْمُ أَنْ يَدْخُلُوهَا قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ شَابٌّ مِنْهُمْ إِنَّمَا فَرَرْتُمْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ النَّارِ فَلا تَعْجَلُوا حَتَّى تَلْقَوْا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَإِنْ أَمَرَكُمْ أَنْ تَدْخُلُوهَا فَادْخُلُوهَا قَالَ فَرَجَعُوا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ لَوْ دَخَلْتُمُوهَا مَا خَرَجْتُمْ مِنْهَا أَبَدًا إِنَّمَا الطَّاعَةُ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ

So they gathered firewood, then he said: Light a fire. So they lit a fire, then he said: Didnʿt the Messenger of Allah ﷺ command you to listen to me and obey? They said: Yes indeed. He said: Then enter it (the fire). They looked at one another and said: We only fled to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ because of the Fire. They continued talking until his anger dissipated and the fire went out. When they came to the Prophet ﷺ they told him about that and he said: “If they had entered it they would never have come out of it, obedience is only in that which is right and proper.ʿ

قَالَ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ عَلَى سَرِيَّةٍ وَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يُطِيعُوهُ فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ وَجَدَ عَلَيْهِمْ فِي شَيْءٍ فَقَالَ أَلَيْسَ قَدْ أَمَرَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ تُطِيعُونِي ؟ قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ فَاجْمَعُوا حَطَبًا فَجَمَعُوا حَطَبًا ثُمَّ دَعَا بِنَارٍ فَأَضْرَمَهَا فِي الْحَطَبِ ثُمَّ قَالَ عَزَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ لَتَدْخُلُنَّهَا فَهَمَّ الْقَوْمُ بِذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ شَابٌّ مِنْ أَحْدَثِهِمْ لَا تَعْجَلُوا أَنْ تَدْخُلُوا النَّارَ فَإِنَّمَا فَرَرْتُمْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنَ النَّارِ حَتَّى تَأْتُوا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَإِنْ أَمَرَكُمْ أَنْ تَدْخُلُوا فَادْخُلُوا فَأَتَوُا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرُوا ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ لَوْ دَخَلْتُمُوهَا مَا خَرَجْتُمْ مِنْهَا أَبَدًا وَهَذَا الْكَلَامُ إِنَّمَا يُرْوَى عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَإِسْنَادُ حَدِيثِ عَلِيٍّ ؓ إِسْنَادٌ صَحِيحٌ
