" (عن عمر قال) (*): وَافَقْتُ رَبِّي فِي أَرْبعٍ، قُلْتُ: يا رسولَ الله! لو صَلَّينَا خلفَ المَقَامِ؟ فَأَنْزَلَ الله {وَاتَّخِذُوا مِنْ مَقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى} وَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ الله! لَوْ ضَرَبْتَ عَلَى نِسَائِكَ الْحِجَابَ؛ فَإنَّهُ يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْهِن البَرُّ والْفاجِرُ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {وَإِذَا سَأَلْتُمُوهُنَّ مَتَاعًا فَاسْأَلُوهُنَّ مِنْ وَرَاءِ حِجَابٍ}، وَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيةُ: {وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ مِنْ سُلَالَةٍ مِنْ طِينٍ} إلَى قوله: {ثُمَّ أَنْشَأْنَاهُ خَلْقًا آخَرَ} فلما نزلت قلت أَنا: {تَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ} فنزلت: {فَتَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ}، وَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ لَهُنَّ: لَتَنْتَهُنَّ أو لَيُبَدَّلَنَّ أزْوَاجًا خَيْرًا مِنْكُنَّ، فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَة: {عَسَى رَبُّهُ إِنْ طَلَّقَكُنَّ} ... ".
I agreed with my Lord, may He be glorified and exalted, in three matters - or my Lord agreed with me in three matters, I said: O Messenger of Allah, why don't you take the Maqarn of Ibraheem as a place of prayer? Then Allah revealed the verse: ʿAnd take you (people) the Maqam (place) of Ibraheem (Abraham) [or the stone on which Ibraheem (Abraham) stood while he was building the Ka'bah) as a place of prayerʿ (al Baqarah 2:125). And I said: Why don't you tell the Mothers of the Believers to observe hijab, for both righteous people and evildoers enter upon you? Then the verse of hijab was revealed. And I heard something about the Mothers of the Believers, so I talked to them and told them: You should stop bothering the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , or Allah will replace you with wives who are better than you and are Muslims. Then I came to one of the Mothers of the Believers and she said: O 'Umar, is it the case that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cannot admonish his wives so that you come and admonish them? So I stopped, then Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, revealed the verse: “It may be if he divorced you (all) that his Lord will give him instead of you, wives better than you Muslims (who submit to Allah), believers, obedient (to Allah)...ʿ [at-Tahreerm 66:5)
قَالَقَالَ عُمَرُ وَافَقْتُ رَبِّي ﷻ فِي ثَلاثٍ أَوْ وَافَقَنِي رَبِّي فِي ثَلاثٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوِ اتَّخَذْتَ الْمَقَامَ مُصَلًّى؟ قَالَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {وَاتَّخِذُوا مِنْ مَّقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى} وَقُلْتُ لَوْ حَجَبْتَ عَنْ أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَإِنَّهُ يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْكَ الْبَرُّ وَالْفَاجِرُ؟ فَأُنْزِلَتْ آيَةُ الْحِجَابِ قَالَ وَبَلَغَنِي عَنْ أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ شَيْءٌ فَاسْتَقْرَيْتُهُنَّ أَقُولُ لَهُنَّ لَتَكُفُّنَّ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ لَيُبْدِلَنَّهُ اللهُ بِكُنَّ أَزْوَاجًا خَيْرًا مِنْكُنَّ مُسْلِمَاتٍ حَتَّى أَتَيْتُ عَلَى إِحْدَى أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَقَالَتْ يَا عُمَرُ أَمَا فِي رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا يَعِظُ نِسَاءَهُ حَتَّى تَعِظَهُنَّ؟ فَكَفَفْتُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {عَسَى رَبُّهُ إِنْ طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَنْ يُبْدِلَهُ أَزْوَاجًا خَيْرًا مِّنْكُنَّ مُسْلِمَاتٍ مُّؤْمِنَاتٍ قَانِتَاتٍ} الْآيَةَ
ʿUmar said: My opinion coincided with that of my Lord in three matters and my Lord confirmed my opinion in three matters. I said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, why donʿt you take Maqam Ibraheem as a place of prayer? Then Allah revealed the words: “And take you (people) the Maqam (place) of Ibraheem (Abraham) [or the stone on which Ibraheem (Abraham) to stood while he was building the Kaʿbah] as a place of prayer” [al-Baqarah 2:125]. And I said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, both righteous and immoral people enter upon you; why donʿt you tell the Mothers of the Believers to observe hijab? Then Allah revealed the verse of hijab. And I heard that the Prophet ﷺ had rebuked some of his wives, so I sought permission to speak to the Mothers of the Believers, then I entered upon them and said to each one of them: By Allah, either you stop, or Allah will give His Messenger (wives) who are better than you. I went to one of his wives and she said: O ‘Umar, donʿt you think that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is able to exhort his wives? Why are you exhorting them? Then Allah revealed the words. It may be if he divorced you (all) that his Lord will give him instead of you, wives better than youʿ [at-Tahreem 66:5]
قَالَقَالَ عُمَرُ وَافَقْتُ رَبِّي فِي ثَلاثٍ أوْ وَافَقَنِي رَبِّي فِي ثَلاثٍ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوِ اتَّخَذْتَ مِنْ مَقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى؟ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {وَاتَّخِذُوا مِنْ مَّقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى} قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهُ يَدْخُلُ عَلَيْكَ الْبَرُّ وَالْفَاجِرُ فَلَوْ أَمَرْتَ أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ بِالْحِجَابِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ آيَةَ الْحِجَابِ وَبَلَغَنِي مُعَاتَبَةُ النَّبِيِّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ بَعْضَ نِسَائِهِ قَالَ فَاسْتَقْرَيْتُ أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِنَّ فَجَعَلْتُ أَسْتَقْرِيهِنَّ وَاحِدَةً وَاحِدَةً وَاللهِ لَئِنِ انْتَهَيْتُنَّ وَإِلَّا لَيُبَدِّلَنَّ اللهُ رَسُولَهُ خَيْرًا مِنْكُنَّ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ عَلَى بَعْضِ نِسَائِهِ قَالَتْ يَا عُمَرُ أَمَا فِي رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا يَعِظُ نِسَاءَهُ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَنْتَ تَعِظُهُنَّ؟ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {عَسَى رَبُّهُ إِنْ طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَنْ يُبْدِلَهُ أَزْوَاجًا خَيْرًا مِّنْكُنَّ}
ذِكْرُ بَعْضِ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ جَلَّ وَعَلَا مِنَ الْآيِ وِفَاقًا لِمَا يَقُولُهُ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ
I agreed with my Lord, may He be glorified and exalted, in three matters - or my Lord agreed with me in three matters, I said: O Messenger of Allah, why don't you take the Maqarn of Ibraheem as a place of prayer?
