Three things for damnation, three for salvation, and three for expiation

Three things are destructive, three things are salvific, and three things to rise in ranks, and three things are expiating. It was asked: O Messenger of Allah...

(a) what are the destructive things? He said: (1) Greed that is obeyed, (2) desires that are followed, and (3) a person's self-admiration.

(b) It was asked: What are the things that will save? He said: (1) Fear of Allah in private and public, (2) moderation while having riches or in poverty, and (3) justice in both during pleasure and in anger.

(c) It was asked: What are the expiations? He said: (1) Stepping towards the masajid, (2) waiting for prayer after prayer, and (3) completing ablution on cold days when it is challenging.

"ثَلاثٌ مُهْلكَاتٌ، وَثلَاثٌ مُنْجيَاتٌ، وَثَلَاثٌ دَرَجاتٌ، وَثَلَاثٌ كَفَّارَاتٌ؛

(أ) قِيلَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّه مَا الْمُهْلِكَاتُ؟ قَالَ: شُحٌّ مُطَاعٌ، وَهَوًى مُتَّبَعٌ، وَإِعْجَابُ الْمَرْء بنَفْسِهِ،

(ب) قِيل: فَمَا الْمُنْجِيَاتُ؟ قَال: تَقْوَى اللَّه في السِّرِّ وَالْعَلَانِيَةِ، وَالاقْتصَادُ في الْفَقْرَ وَالْغِنَى، وَالْعَدْلُ في الرِّضا وَالْغَضب،

(ج) قِيلَ: فمَا الْكَفَّارَاتُ؟ قَال: نَقْل الأَقْدَام إِلَى المسَاجِد، وانْتِظَارُ الصَّلاة بَعْدَ الصَّلَاةِ، وَإِتْمَامُ الْوُضُوءِ فِى الْيَوْمِ الْبَارِد عِنَد السَّبَرَاتِ".

Three things are destructive, three things are salvific, three things expiate ˹sins˺, and three things to rise in ranks.

(a) As for the destructive things: (1) greed that is obeyed, (2) ˹wrong˺ desires that are followed, and (3) a person's self-admiration.

(b) As for things that will save: (1) being just in pleasure and in anger, (2) moderation while having riches or in poverty, and (3) fearing Allah in secret or public.

(c) As for things that expiate ˹sins˺: (1) waiting for ˹next˺ prayer after a prayer, (2) perfecting the wudu on cold days when it is challenging, and (3) taking steps towards the congregational ˹prayers˺.

(d) As for the things that raise ranks: (1) feeding ˹the needy˺, (2) spreading the salam (greetings of peace), and (3) praying at night when others are asleep.

(أ) فَأَمَّا الْمُهْلِكَاتُ: فَشُحٌّ مُطَاعٌ، وهَوًى مُتَّبعٌ، وإِعْجَابُ الْمرْءِ بنفْسِهِ.

(ب) وأَمَّا الْمُنْجيَاتُ: فالعدْلُ في الْغضَب والرِّضَى، والْقصْدُ في الْفَقْرِ والْغِنَى، وخَشيْةُ اللَّه فِى السِّرِّ والْعلَانِيةِ.

(ج) وأَمَّا الْكفَّاراتُ: فانْتِظارُ الصَّلَاةِ بَعْدَ الصَّلَاةِ، وإِسْباغُ الْوُضوءِ في السَّبراتِ، ونقْلُ الأَقْدامِ إلَى الْجماعاتِ.

(د) وأَمَّا الدَّرجاتُ. فَإِطْعامُ الطَّعامِ وإِفْشَاءُ السَّلَامِ، والصَّلَاةُ باللَّيْلِ وَالنَّاسُ نِيَامٌ.
