0.58. Encouraging Livelihood by (working with) Hands and Abstaining from Begging

٠.٥٨۔ باب الحث على الأكل من عمل يده والتعفف به عن السؤال والتعرض للإعطاء

(538) bukhari:1470ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Abū al-Zinād > al-Aʿraj > Abū Hurayrah

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By Him in Whose Hand my life is, it is better for anyone of you to take a rope and cut the wood (from the forest) and carry it over his back and sell it (as a means of earning his living) rather than to ask a person for something and that person may give him or not."  

(٥٣٨) البخاري:١٤٧٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لأَنْ يَأْخُذَ أَحَدُكُمْ حَبْلَهُ فَيَحْتَطِبَ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ رَجُلاً فَيَسْأَلَهُ أَعْطَاهُ أَوْ مَنَعَهُ  

(538) bukhari:1471Mūsá > Wuhayb > Hishām from his father > al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām

The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is better for anyone of you to take a rope (and cut) and bring a bundle of wood (from the forest) over his back and sell it and Allah will save his face (from the Hell-Fire) because of that, rather than to ask the people who may give him or not."  

(٥٣٨) البخاري:١٤٧١حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ الْعَوَّامِ ؓ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لأَنْ يَأْخُذَ أَحَدُكُمْ حَبْلَهُ فَيَأْتِيَ بِحُزْمَةِ الْحَطَبِ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ فَيَبِيعَهَا فَيَكُفَّ اللَّهُ بِهَا وَجْهَهُ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَسْأَلَ النَّاسَ أَعْطَوْهُ أَوْ مَنَعُوهُ  

(538) bukhari:2373Muʿallá b. Asad > Wuhayb > Hishām from his father > al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām

The Prophet ﷺ said, "No doubt, one had better take a rope (and cut) and tie a bundle of wood and sell it whereby Allah will keep his face away (from Hell-fire) rather than ask others who may give him or not."  

(٥٣٨) البخاري:٢٣٧٣حَدَّثَنَا مُعَلَّى بْنُ أَسَدٍ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ عَنْ هِشَامٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ الْعَوَّامِ ؓ

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ لأَنْ يَأْخُذَ أَحَدُكُمْ أَحْبُلاً فَيَأْخُذَ حُزْمَةً مِنْ حَطَبٍ فَيَبِيعَ فَيَكُفَّ اللَّهُ بِهِ وَجْهَهُ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ يَسْأَلَ النَّاسَ أُعْطِيَ أَمْ مُنِعَ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No doubt, it is better for any one of you to cut a bundle of wood and carry it over his back rather than to ask someone who may or may not give him."  

(٥٣٩) البخاري:٢٠٧٤حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ مَوْلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لأَنْ يَحْتَطِبَ أَحَدُكُمْ حُزْمَةً عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ يَسْأَلَ أَحَدًا فَيُعْطِيَهُ أَوْ يَمْنَعَهُ

(٥٣٩) البخاري:٢٣٧٤حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ مَوْلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لأَنْ يَحْتَطِبَ أَحَدُكُمْ حُزْمَةً عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَسْأَلَ أَحَدًا فَيُعْطِيَهُ أَوْ يَمْنَعَهُ  

(540) bukhari:2073Yaḥyá b. Mūsá > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Maʿmar > Hammām b. Munabbih > Abū Hurayrah

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The Prophet ﷺ David used not to eat except from the earnings of his manual labor."  

(٥٤٠) البخاري:٢٠٧٣حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنْ هَمَّامِ بْنِ مُنَبِّهٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنَّ دَاوُدَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ كَانَ لاَ يَأْكُلُ إِلاَّ مِنْ عَمَلِ يَدِهِ  

(541) muslim:2168aYaḥyá b. Yaḥyá > Hushaym > Sayyār > Thābit al-Bunānī > Anas b. Mālik

Anas b. Malik reported that when Messenger of Allah ﷺ happened to pass by young boys he would great them.  

(٥٤١) مسلم:٢١٦٨aحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى أَخْبَرَنَا هُشَيْمٌ عَنْ سَيَّارٍ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَرَّ عَلَى غِلْمَانٍ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ  

(541) muslim:2379Haddāb b. Khālid > Ḥammād b. Salamah > Thābit > Abū Rāfiʿ > Abū Hurayrah

Zakariyya (peace be upon him) was a carpenter.  

(٥٤١) مسلم:٢٣٧٩حَدَّثَنَا هَدَّابُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ كَانَ زَكَرِيَّاءُ نَجَّارًا  

(542) bukhari:2072Ibrāhīm b. Mūsá > ʿĪsá > Thawr > Khālid b. Maʿdān > al-Miqdām

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Nobody has ever eaten a better meal than that which one has earned by working with one's own hands. The Prophet ﷺ of Allah, David used to eat from the earnings of his manual labor."  

(٥٤٢) البخاري:٢٠٧٢حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُوسَى أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى عَنْ ثَوْرٍ عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ مَعْدَانَ عَنِ الْمِقْدَامِ ؓ

عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَا أَكَلَ أَحَدٌ طَعَامًا قَطُّ خَيْرًا مِنْ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مِنْ عَمَلِ يَدِهِ وَإِنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ دَاوُدَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ كَانَ يَأْكُلُ مِنْ عَمَلِ يَدِهِ
