99. Sūrat Az-Zalzalah

٩٩۔ سُورَةُ الزلزَلة

The Earthquake (Medinan)

quran:99:1 – In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

When the earth is shaken with its ˹final˺ earthquake  

When earth is shaken, ˹when˺ it is rocked for the rising of the Hour, with its ˹final˺ quake, with its most violent rocking, one that befits its magnitude,
القرآن:٩٩:١ – بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا  

{إذا زُلزلت الأرض} حركت لقيام الساعة {زلزالها} تحريكها الشديد المناسب لعظمتها.
quran:99:2 –

And the earth discharges its burdens  

and the earth brings forth its burdens, its hidden treasures and its dead, casting them onto its surface,
القرآن:٩٩:٢ –

وَأَخْرَجَتِ الْأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا  

{وأخرجت الأرض أثقالها} كنوزها وموتاها فألقتها على ظهرها.
quran:99:3 –

And man says, "What is ˹wrong˺ with it?" -  

and man, the disbeliever in resurrection, says, ‘What is wrong with it?’ — in denial of that situation.
القرآن:٩٩:٣ –

وَقَالَ الْإِنْسَانُ مَا لَهَا  

{وقال الإنسان} الكافر بالبعث {مالها} إنكارا لتلك الحالة.
quran:99:4 –

That Day, it will report its news  

On that day (yawma’idhin substitutes for, and is the response to, idhā, ‘when’) it shall relate its chronicles, it shall inform of the good and evil deeds committed in it,
القرآن:٩٩:٤ –

يَوْمَئِذٍ تُحَدِّثُ أَخْبَارَهَا  

{يومئذ} بدل من إذا وجوابها {تُحدث أخبارها} تخبر بما عمل عليها من خير وشر.
quran:99:5 –

Because your Lord has commanded it.  

for its Lord will have inspired it, that is, He will have commanded her to ˹do˺ this — in a hadīth ˹it is stated˺, ‘It ˹the earth˺ shall testify to every single deed committed by every servant and handmaiden upon its surface’.
القرآن:٩٩:٥ –

بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوْحَىٰ لَهَا  

(بأن) بسبب أن (ربك أوحى لها) أي أمرها بذلك، وفي الحديث "" تشهد على كل عبد أو أمة بكل ما عمل على ظهرها "".
quran:99:6 –

That Day, the people will depart separated ˹into categories˺ to be shown ˹the result of˺ their deeds.  

On that day mankind shall issue forth, they will depart from the site of the Reckoning, in separate groups, divided up, so that those taking it ˹their book˺ by the right hand will go to Paradise, while those taking it by the left hand will go to the Fire, to be shown their deeds, that is, the requital for them, in ˹either˺ Paradise or the Fire.
القرآن:٩٩:٦ –

يَوْمَئِذٍ يَصْدُرُ النَّاسُ أَشْتَاتًا لِيُرَوْا أَعْمَالَهُمْ  

{يومئذ يصدر الناس} ينصرفون من موقف الحساب {أشتاتا} متفرقين فآخذ ذات اليمين إلى الجنة وآخذ ذات الشمال إلى النار {ليروا أعمالهم} أي جزاءها من الجنة أو النار.
quran:99:7 –

So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it,  

So whoever does an atom’s weight of good shall see it: he shall see its reward,
القرآن:٩٩:٧ –

فَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ  

{فمن يعمل مثقال ذرة} زنة نملة صغيرة {خيرا يره} ير ثوابه.
quran:99:8 –

And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.  

and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil shall see it: he shall see its requital. Meccan or Medinese, consisting of 11 verses.
القرآن:٩٩:٨ –

وَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُ  

{ومن يعمل مثقال ذرة شرا يره} ير جزاءه.
