100. Sūrat al-ʿĀdiyāt

١٠٠۔ سُورَةُ العَادِيات

100.1 An example of horses who are more grateful to their owners than men to their Lord.

١٠٠۔١ مقطع في سُورَةُ العَادِيات

quran:100:1In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

By the racers, panting,  

By the chargers, the steeds that charge in attack and snort ˹with a˺, snorting — this being the ˹name of the˺ sound which they emit from inside them when they charge;
القرآن:١٠٠:١بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

وَالْعَادِيَاتِ ضَبْحًا  

{والعاديات} الخيل تعدو في الغزو وتضبح {ضبحا} هو صوت أجوافها إذا عدت.
quran:100:2

And the producers of sparks ˹when˺ striking  

by the strikers, the steeds that strike fire ˹by way˺, of sparks, with their hoofs, when they gallop across rocky terrain by night;
القرآن:١٠٠:٢

فَالْمُورِيَاتِ قَدْحًا  

{فالموريات} الخيل توري النار {قدحا} بحوافرها إذا سارت في الأرض ذات الحجارة بالليل.
quran:100:3

And the chargers at dawn,  

by the dawn-raiders, the steeds that make raids against the enemy at dawn at the hands of their riders,
القرآن:١٠٠:٣

فَالْمُغِيرَاتِ صُبْحًا  

{فالمغيرات صبحا} الخيل تغير على العدو وقت الصبح بإغارة أصحابها.
quran:100:4

Stirring up thereby ˹clouds of˺ dust,  

raising, stirring up, therein, in the place of their charge or at that time ˹of dawn˺, a trail of dust, by the power of their movement,
القرآن:١٠٠:٤

فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِ نَقْعًا  

{فأثرن} هيجن {به} بمكان عدوهن أو بذلك الوقت {نقعا} غبارا بشدة حركتهن.
quran:100:5

Arriving thereby in the center collectively,  

cleaving therewith, with the dust, a host, of the enemy, that is to say, cutting right into their centre! (the verb is supplemented to the noun ˹in the above instances˺ because it serves to explain the verbal action, in other words, wa’llātī ‘adawna fa-awrayna fa-agharna, ‘by those that charge, then strike sparks, then raid’).
القرآن:١٠٠:٥

فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا  

{فوسطن به} بالنقع {جمعا} من العدو، أي صرن وسطه وعطف الفعل على الاسم لأنه في تأويل الفعل أي واللاتي عدون فأورين فأغرن.
quran:100:6

Indeed mankind, to his Lord, is ungrateful.  

Verily man, the disbeliever, is ungrateful to his Lord, thankless, denying ˹the reality of˺ His graces, exalted be He,
القرآن:١٠٠:٦

إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ  

{إن الإنسان} الكافر {لربه لكنود} لكفور يجحد نعمته تعالى.
quran:100:7

And indeed, he is to that a witness.  

and verily to that, ingratitude of his, he is a witness, bearing witness against himself to his own actions.
القرآن:١٠٠:٧

وَإِنَّهُ عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ لَشَهِيدٌ  

{وإنه على ذلك} أي كنوده {لشهيد} يشهد على نفسه بصنعه.
quran:100:8

And indeed he is, in love of wealth, intense.  

And verily in the love of wealth he is avid, and is therefore niggardly with it.
القرآن:١٠٠:٨

وَإِنَّهُ لِحُبِّ الْخَيْرِ لَشَدِيدٌ  

{وإنه لحب الخير} أي المال الحب له فيبخل به.
quran:100:9

But does he not know that when the contents of the graves are scattered  

Does he not know that, when that which is in the graves, in the way of the dead, is strewn, when it is turned over and brought out, that is to say, ˹that when˺ they are raised,
القرآن:١٠٠:٩

أَفَلَا يَعْلَمُ إِذَا بُعْثِرَ مَا فِي الْقُبُورِ  

{أفلا يعلم إذا بُعثر} أثير وأخرج {ما في القبور} من الموتى، أي بعثوا.
quran:100:10

And that within the breasts is obtained,  

and that which is in the breasts, the hearts, of disbelief or faith, is obtained, ˹when˺ it is revealed and examined,
القرآن:١٠٠:١٠

وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِي الصُّدُورِ  

{وحصِّل} بين وأفرز {ما في الصدور} القلوب من الكفر والإيمان.
quran:100:11

Indeed, their Lord with them, that Day, is ˹fully˺ Acquainted.  

on that day their Lord will indeed be Aware of them, Knower ˹of them˺ and will requite them for their disbelief (the pronoun reverts to the plural because of the ˹collective˺ import of the term ‘man’; this sentence indicates the direct object of ˹the verb˺ ya‘lamu, ‘˹does he not˺ know’, that is to say, ‘We will requite him at the time mentioned’; khabīrun, ‘Aware’, is semantically connected to yawma’idhin, ‘on that day’, even though ˹in fact˺ God is ever Aware, because that is the Day of Requital. Meccan, consisting of 11 verses.
القرآن:١٠٠:١١

إِنَّ رَبَّهُمْ بِهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَخَبِيرٌ  

{إن ربهم بهم يومئذ لخبير} لعالم فيجازيهم على كفرهم، أعيد الضمير جمعا نظرا لمعنى الإنسان وهذه الجملة دلت على مفعول يعلم، أي إنا نجازيه وقت ما ذكر وتعلق خبير بيومئذ وهو تعالى خبير دائما لأنه يوم المجازاة.
