قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {أَفَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي كَفَرَ بِآيَاتِنَا} [مريم: 77]

nasai-kubra:11260Muḥammad b. al-ʿAlāʾ > Abū Muʿāwiyah > al-Aʿmash > Muslim > Masrūq > Khabbāb

[Machine] "And by God, I will not grant you until you disbelieve in Muhammad." So I said, "No, by God, I will not disbelieve in Muhammad until you die and then you are resurrected." He said, "If I die and then I am resurrected, you will come to me and I will have wealth and children, so I will give it to you." So Allah revealed, "So have you seen the one who disbelieves in Our verses... and he comes to Us alone?"

I was a blacksmith In the Pre-Islamic period of ignorance, and 'Asi bin Wail owed me some money. I went to him to demand it, but he said to me, "I will not pay you unless you reject faith in Muhammad." I replied, "By Allah, I will never disbelieve Muhammad till Allah let you die and then resurrect you." He said, "Then wait till I die and come to life again, for then I will be given property and offspring and will pay your right." So, thus revelation came: "Have you seen him who disbelieved in Our signs and yet says, 'I will be given property and offspring?' " (19.77)

He said, "Will I be dead and then resurrected after my death?" I said, "Yes." He said, "There I will have property and offspring and then I will pay you your due." Then Allah revealed. I said, "I will not disbelieve till Allah kills you and then you get resurrected." He said, "Leave me till I die and get resurrected, then I will be given wealth and children and I will pay you your debt." On that occasion it was revealed to the Prophet: 'Have you seen him who disbelieved in Our signs and says: Surely I will be given wealth and children? I will never repay you unless you belie Muhammad. I said: I would never belie Muhammad until you die and you are again raised up. He said: When I would be raised up after death, I would repay your debt when I would get my property and children back. Wakiʿ said: This is how Al-Aʿmash has narrated and it was on this occasion that this verse was revealed: "Hast thou seen him who disbelieves in Our message and says: I shall certainly be given wealth and children" (xix, 77) up to "he would come to Us alone" (xix, 80).
