The Qur'an is recited in every prayer and in those prayers in which Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited aloud for us, we recite aloud in the same prayers for you; and the prayers in which the Prophet ﷺ recited quietly, we recite quietly. If you recite "Al-Fatiha" only it is sufficient but if you recite something else in addition, it is better.  

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ يَقُولُ فِي كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ يُقْرَأُ فَمَا أَسْمَعَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَسْمَعْنَاكُمْ وَمَا أَخْفَى عَنَّا أَخْفَيْنَا عَنْكُمْ وَإِنْ لَمْ تَزِدْ عَلَى أُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ أَجْزَأَتْ وَإِنْ زِدْتَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ  

Recitation (of Surat al-Fatiha) in every (rak'ah) of prayer in essential. (The recitation) that we listened to from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we made you listen to it. And that which he recited inwardly to us, we recited it inwardly for you. And he who recites Umm al-Qur'an, it is enough for him (to complete the prayer), and he who adds to it (recites some other verses of the Holy Qur'an along with Surat al-Fatiha), it is preferable for him.  

أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فِي كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ قِرَاءَةٌ فَمَا أَسْمَعَنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَسْمَعْنَاكُمْ وَمَا أَخْفَى مِنَّا أَخْفَيْنَاهُ مِنْكُمْ وَمَنْ قَرَأَ بِأُمِّ الْكِتَابِ فَقَدْ أَجْزَأَتْ عَنْهُ وَمَنْ زَادَ فَهُوَ أَفْضَلُ  

If I add nothing to the (recitation) of the Umm al Qur'an (Surat al-Fatiha), would it make the prayer incomplete? He (AbuHuraira) said: If you add to that (if you recite some of verses of the Qur'an along with Surat at-Fatiha) that is better for you. But if you are contented with it (Surat al-Fatiha) only, it is sufficient for you. (Using translation from Muslim 396b)   

قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ فِي كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ قِرَاءَةٌ فَمَا أَسْمَعَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَسْمَعْنَاكُمْ وَمَا أَخْفَى أَخْفَيْنَاهُ مِنْكُمْ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ أَزِدْ عَلَى أُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ؟ قَالَ إِنْ زِدْتَ عَلَيْهَا فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ وَإِنِ انْتَهَيْتَ عَلَيْهَا أَجْزَأَتْ عَنْكَ  

[Machine] Abu Hurairah said, "If you are an imam, then shorten the prayer, for among the people there are elderly, weak, and those in need. But if you pray alone, then prolong what appears good to you. In every prayer, recite aloud, for what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard, we also hear, and what he whispered, we also whispered. Then, a man asked him, 'What do you think if I do not exceed the Umm al-Quran?' He said, 'If you exceed it, it is good, and if you reach it, it suffices you.'"  

قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ إِذَا كُنْتَ إِمَامًا فَخَفِّفْ فَإِنَّ فِي النَّاسِ الْكَبِيرَ وَالضَّعِيفَ وَذَا الْحَاجَةِ وَإِذَا صَلَّيْتَ وَحْدَكَ فَطَوِّلْ مَا بَدَا لَكَ وَفِي كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ اقْرَأْ فَمَا أَسْمَعَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَسْمَعْنَاكُمْ وَمَا أَخْفَى عَنَّا أَخْفَيْنَا عَنْكُمْ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَمْ أَزِدْ عَلَى أُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ؟ قَالَ إِنْ زِدْتَ عَلَيْهَا فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ وَإِنِ انْتَهَيْتَ إِلَيْهَا أَجْزَأَ عَنْكَ
