" O ye who believe I raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor shout loud unto him in discourse, as ye shout loud unto one another, lest your deeds should become null and void, while you perceive not" (xlix. 2-5), was revealed. Thabit b. Qais confined himself in his house and said: I am one of the denizens of Fire, and he deliberately avoided coming to the Apostle ﷺ. The Apostle ﷺ asked Sa'd b, Mu'adh about him and said, Abu Amr, how is Thabit? Has he fallen sick? Sa'd said: He is my neighbour, but I do not know of his illness. Sa'd came to him (Thabit), and conveyed to him the message of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Upon this Thabit said: This verse was revealed, and you are well aware of the fact that, amongst all of you, mine is the voice louder than that of the Messenger of Allah, and so I am one amongst the denizens of Fire, Sa'd Informed the Prophet about it. Upon this the Messenger of Allah observed: (Nay, not so) but he (Thabit) is one of the dwellers of Paradise.

أَنَّهُ قَالَ لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لاَ تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ} إِلَى آخِرِ الآيَةِ جَلَسَ ثَابِتُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ فِي بَيْتِهِ وَقَالَ أَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ وَاحْتَبَسَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ سَعْدَ بْنَ مُعَاذٍ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا عَمْرٍو مَا شَأْنُ ثَابِتٍ أَشْتَكَى قَالَ سَعْدٌ إِنَّهُ لَجَارِي وَمَا عَلِمْتُ لَهُ بِشَكْوَى قَالَ فَأَتَاهُ سَعْدٌ فَذَكَرَ لَهُ قَوْلَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ ثَابِتٌ أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ أَنِّي مِنْ أَرْفَعِكُمْ صَوْتًا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ سَعْدٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَلْ هُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ

[AI] "When this verse was revealed, 'O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet' [Al-Hujurat 2] until His statement 'and you do not perceive' [Al-Zumar 55], Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas, who had a loud voice, said, 'I am the one who used to raise my voice above the Prophet of Allah. My deeds have been wasted, and I am from the people of the Hellfire.' He then sat with his sorrowful family, and the Messenger of Allah then asked about him. Some people went to him and said, 'The Messenger of Allah is asking about you, what is wrong?' He said, 'I am the one who used to raise my voice above the voice of the Prophet, and I would speak openly. My deeds have been wasted, and I am from the people of the Hellfire.' They went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of what he had said. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'No, rather he is from the people of Paradise.' Anas said, 'We used to see him walking among us, and we knew that he was from the people of Paradise. On the day of Yamamah, during one of our open battles, Thabit bin Qays came among us while we were talking and said, while he had already been buried in the shroud, 'What a bad thing you are ordering your companions to do! Engage in fighting until you die.'"

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ} [الحجرات 2] إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {وَأَنْتُمْ لَا تَشْعُرُونَ} [الزمر 55] وَكَانَ ثَابِتُ بْنُ قَيْسِ بْنِ الشَّمَّاسِ رَفِيعَ الصَّوْتِ فَقَالَ أَنَا الَّذِي كُنْتُ أَرْفَعُ صَوْتِي عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَبِطَ عَمَلِي أَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ وَجَلَسَ فِي أَهْلِهِ حَزِينًا فَتَفَقَّدَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَانْطَلَقَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا لَهُ تَفَقَّدَكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا لَكَ؟ فَقَالَ أَنَا الَّذِي أَرْفَعُ صَوْتِي فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ وَأَجْهَرُ بِالْقَوْلِ حَبِطَ عَمَلِي وَأَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَأَتَوْا النَّبيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرُوهُ بِمَا قَالَ فَقَالَ لَا بَلْ هُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ قَالَ أَنَسٌ وَكُنَّا نَرَاهُ يَمْشِي بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِنَا وَنَحْنُ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْيَمَامَةِ كَانَ فِينَا بَعْضُ الِانْكِشَافِ فَجَاءَ ثَابِتُ بْنُ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ وَقَدْ تَحَنَّطَ وَلَبِسَ كَفَنَهُ فَقَالَبِئْسَمَا تُعَوِّدُونَ أَقْرَانَكُمْ فَقَاتَلَهُمْ حَتَّى قُتِلَ

[AI] Narrated from the Prophet ﷺ , Sa'd ibn Mu'adh inquired, "O Abu 'Amr, what is Thabit complaining about?" Sa'd replied, "He is complaining about his neighbor, and I do not know if he has any legitimate complaint." Sa'd went to Thabit and reminded him of the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Thabit said, "This verse was revealed, and you all know that I am among those who raise their voices against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Therefore, I am one of the inhabitants of Hell." Sa'd informed the Prophet ﷺ about this. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No, he is among the people of Paradise."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ سَعْدَ بْنَ مُعَاذٍ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا عَمْرٍو مَا شَأْنُ ثَابِتٍ أَشْتَكَى؟ فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ إِنَّهُ لَجَارِي وَمَا عَلِمْتُ لَهُ شَكْوَى قَالَ فَأَتَاهُ سَعْدٌ فَذَكَرَ لَهُ قَوْلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ ثَابِتٌ أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ أَنِّي مِنْ أَرْفَعِكُمْ صَوْتًا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ سَعْدٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَلْ هُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ

[AI] "When {O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet} [Al-Hujurat 2]. Qa'dathabith bin Qais was sitting in his house when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ missed him. He said to Saad ibn Mu'adh, 'O Abu Amr, what is the matter with Thabit bin Qais? Why is he not seen? Is he sick?' He said, 'I do not know if he is ill, but I know that he has a neighbor.' Saad went to him and mentioned the statement of the Prophet ﷺ to him. He said, 'I already knew that I was one of the loudest of you in raising my voice above the voice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. This verse was revealed, and I have been destroyed from the people of Hellfire.' Saad mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, who said, 'No, he is one of the people of Paradise.'"

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ} [الحجرات 2] قَالَ قَعَدَثَابِتُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ فِي بَيْتِهِ فَفَقَدَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لِسَعْدِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ يَا أَبَا عَمْرٍو مَا شَأْنُ ثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ لَا يُرَى؟ أَشْتَكَى؟ فَقَالَ مَا عَلِمْتُ لَهُ بِمَرَضٍ وَإِنَّهُ لَجَارِي فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ سَعْدٌ فَذَكَرَ لَهُ قَوْلَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ قَدْ عَلِمْتَ أَنِّي كُنْتُ مِنْ أَشَدِّكُمْ رَفْعَ صَوْتٍ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَقَدْ نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ وَقَدْ هَلَكْتُ أَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ سَعْدٌ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ بَلْ هُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ

[AI] "When this verse was revealed: 'O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet,' Thabit bin Qais said, 'By Allah, I used to raise my voice in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, and I fear that Allah may have become angry with me.' So he became sad and his complexion changed. The Messenger of Allah asked about him, and it was said, 'O Prophet of Allah, he says: I fear that I will be one of the people of the Fire, for I used to raise my voice in the presence of the Prophet.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Rather, he is one of the people of Paradise.' So we used to see him walking among us, a man from the people of Paradise."

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمُ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ} قَالَ ثَابِتُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ أَنَا وَاللَّهِ الَّذِي كُنْتُ أَرْفَعُ صَوْتِي عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا أَخْشَى أَنْ يَكُونَ اللَّهُ قَدْ غَضِبَ عَلَيَّ فَحَزِنَ وَاصْفَرَّ فَفَقَدَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَقِيلَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِنَّهُ يَقُولُ إِنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَرْفَعُ صَوْتِي عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «بَلْ هُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ» فَكُنَّا نَرَاهُ يَمْشِي بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِنَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ «

أَنَّ ثَابِتَ بْنَ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ { لا تَرْفَعُوا أصواتكم فوق صوت النبي} قَعَدَ فِي بَيْتِهِ وَقال أَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ كُنْتُ أَرْفَعُ صَوْتِي عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فاتبطأه فَقَالَ مَالِي لَا أَرَى ثَابِتًا أَشْتَكَى؟ فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ إِنَّهُ لَجَارِي ومَا عَلِمْتُ لَهُ شَكَاةً فَذَكَرَ سَعْدٌ ذَلِكَ لِثَابِتٍ وَقال إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدِ اسْتَبْطَأَكَ قَالَ إِنَّ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ أُنْزِلَتْ وَإِنِّي كُنْتُ أَرْفَعُ صَوْتِي عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ سَعْدٌ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ بَلْ هُوَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ قَدْ رَوَاهُ حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ ثابتٍ وَأَجَلُّ مَنْ رَوَاهُ عَنْ ثابتٍ سُلَيْمَانُ التَّيْمِيُّ ولاَ نعلمُ أَسْنَدَ سُلَيْمَانُ التَّيْمِيُّ عَنْ ثابتٍ غَيْرَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ

[AI] "When the following verse was revealed: 'O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not.' [Quran 49:2] Thabit bin Qays said, 'By Allah, I used to raise my voice in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I fear that Allah may become angry with me because of it and I become saddened and pale because of it.' So the Prophet ﷺ asked about him. It was said, 'O Prophet of Allah, he says: Indeed, I fear that I will be among the people of the Hellfire, for I used to raise my voice in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ .' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Rather, he is among the people of Paradise.' He said, 'So we would see him walking among us, a man from the people of Paradise.'"
