أَنَّ الْإِخْوَةَ أَوْلَى بِالْمِيرَاثِ مِنَ الْجَدِّ وَكَانَ عُمَرُ يَرَى يَوْمَئِذٍ أَنَّ الْجَدَّ أَوْلَى بِمِيرَاثِ ابْنِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ إِخْوَتِهِ» قَالَ زَيْدٌ «فَحَاوَرْتُ أَنَا عُمَرَ فَضَرَبْتُ لِعُمَرَ فِي ذَلِكَ مَثَلًا وَضَرَبَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ لِعُمَرَ مَثَلًا يَوْمَئِذٍ السَّيْلَ يَضْرِبَانِهِ وَيَصْرِفَانِهِ عَلَى نَحْوِ تَصْرِيفِ زَيْدٍ»
