This is because there is no dispute among all the people of knowledge that Uthman was killed in the month of Dhu al-Hijjah in the year thirty-five after the Hijrah. A group of them said he was killed on the twelfth night remaining from that month. If Uthman's killing happened in Dhu al-Hijjah and Hudhayfah lived for forty nights after him, then that refers to the year after it.
