Umar asks whether the Prophet ﷺ divorced his wives
I and a neighbor of mine from the Ansar were among Banu Umayyah ibn Zayd, which is in the upper parts of Madinah. We used to take turns going down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: he would go down one day, and I would go down one day. When I went down, I would bring him the news of that day concerning revelation and other matters; and when he went down, he would do the same. Then my companion from the Ansar went down on his turn, and he struck my door with a hard knock and said, "Is he there?" I was alarmed and went out to him, and he said, "A grave matter has happened."
He said: I then entered upon Hafsah, and there she was weeping. I said, "Has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divorced you women?" She said, "I do not know." Then I entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and, while standing, said, "Have you divorced your wives?" He said, "No." So I said, "Allah is the Greatest!"
