When Allah Apostle was in Ta'if (trying to conquer it), he said to his companions, "Tomorrow we will return (to Medina), if Allah wills." Some of the companions of Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We will not leave till we conquer it." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Therefore, be ready to fight tomorrow." On the following day, they (Muslims) fought fiercely (with the people of Ta'if) and suffered many wounds. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Tomorrow we will return (to Medina), if Allah wills." His companions kept quiet this time. Messenger of Allah ﷺ then smiled.

bukhari:4325ʿAlī b. ʿAbdullāh > Sufyān > ʿAmr > Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Shāʿir al-Aʿmá > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar

[AI] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ besieged Taif and did not gain anything against them, he said, "We are returning, if Allah wills." This was hard on them, and they said, "Are we to go away without conquering it?" On one occasion he said, "We are returning." So he said, "Go out in the morning to fight." They went out in the morning and sustained wounds, so he said, "We are returning tomorrow, if Allah wills." That pleased them, and the Prophet ﷺ laughed.

Sufyan said on one occasion: "Then he smiled." He said: Al-Humaydi said: Sufyan narrated the whole report to us.
