While I was with my uncle, I heard ʿAbdullah bin Ubai bin Salul saying, "Do not spend on those who are with Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that they may disperse and go away (from him). And if we return to Medina, surely, the more honorable will expel therefrom the meaner. "I mentioned that to my uncle who, in turn, mentioned it to the Prophet. The Prophet ﷺ called me and I told him about that. Then he sent for ʿAbdullah bin Ubai and his companions, and they swore that they did not say so. The Prophet ﷺ disbelieved my statement and believed theirs. I was distressed as I have never been before, and I remained in my house. My uncle said to me, "You just wanted the Prophet ﷺ to consider you a liar and hate you." Then Allah revealed:-- 'When the hypocrites come to you, they say: 'We bear witness that you are indeed the Apostle of Allah." (63.1) So the Prophet ﷺ sent for me and recited it and said, "Allah has confirmed your statement."

فَسَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أُبَىٍّ ابْنَ سَلُولَ يَقُولُ لاَ تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا وَلَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الأَذَلَّ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِعَمِّي فَذَكَرَ عَمِّي لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ {فَدَعَانِي فَحَدَّثْتُهُ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أُبَىٍّ وَأَصْحَابِهِ فَحَلَفُوا مَا قَالُوا وَكَذَّبَنِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ} وَصَدَّقَهُمْ فَأَصَابَنِي غَمٌّ لَمْ يُصِبْنِي مِثْلُهُ قَطُّ فَجَلَسْتُ فِي بَيْتِي وَقَالَ عَمِّي مَا أَرَدْتَ إِلَى أَنْ كَذَّبَكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَمَقَتَكَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى {إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ قَالُوا نَشْهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ} وَأَرْسَلَ إِلَىَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَرَأَهَا وَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ صَدَّقَكَ

“I heard Muhammad bin Ka’b Al-Qurazi – forty years ago – narrating from Zaid bin Arqam [may Allah be pleased with him] that during the battle of Tabuk, Abdullah bin Ubayy said: “If we return to Al-Madinah, indeed the more honorable will expel therefrom the meaner.” He said: ‘So I went to the Prophet and mentioned that to him, but he (Abdullah) took an oath that he did not say it. My people blamed me for that, they said: “What did you expect to accomplish from this?’ So I went to my house and slept full of grief. Then the Prophet came to me’ or ‘I went to him, and he said: “Indeed Allah has verified the truth of what you said.” He said: ‘So this Ayah was revealed: there are the ones who say: “Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they desert from him.”

فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوكَ (لئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الأَذَلَّ ) قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَحَلَفَ مَا قَالَهُ فَلاَمَنِي قَوْمِي وَقَالُوا مَا أَرَدْتَ إِلَى هَذِهِ فَأَتَيْتُ الْبَيْتَ وَنِمْتُ كَئِيبًا حَزِينًا فَأَتَانِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَوْ أَتَيْتُهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ صَدَّقَكَ قَالَ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُُ ( هم الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لاَ تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا )

[AI] "I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a battle, and 'Abdullah bin Ubayy said, 'If we return to Medina, the more honorable among us will expel the lower class.' So, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him. 'Abdullah bin Ubayy swore that he did not say anything like that.' The people of my tribe denied my story and asked me what I wanted by reporting this. I left them and slept in sadness. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ sent for me or I went to him, and he said, 'Surely, Allah (ﷻ) has revealed your innocence and confirmed your statement.' Then, this verse was revealed to support my claim: 'They are the ones who say, 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disband.'" (Al-Munafiqoon 7) until 'If we return to Medina, the more honorable among us will expel the lower class.'" (Al-Munafiqoon 8)

كُنْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةٍ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَحَلَفَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُأُبَيٍّ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ شَيْءٌ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَلَامَنِي قَوْمِي وَقَالُوا مَا أَرَدْتَ إِلَى هَذَا؟ قَالَ فَانْطَلَقْتُ فَنِمْتُ كَئِيبًا حَزِينًا قَالَ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ قَدْ أَنْزَلَ عُذْرَكَ وَصَدَّقَكَ قَالَ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا} [المنافقون 7] حَتَّى بَلَغَ {لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ} [المنافقون 8]

[AI] "Do not spend [anything] upon those who are near to the Messenger of Allah and said, 'If we return to Madinah, the more honored [for power] will surely expel therefrom the more humble.' And to Allah belongs the deposing matter of ascent and descent from power. And it is Allah who has knowledge of all things. So, there is no blame upon you, [O Muhammad], whether you eat together or separately. But when you enter houses, give greetings of peace upon each other - a greeting from Allah, blessed and good. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses [of ordinance] that you may understand." (Surah Al-Munafiqun 7)

لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ وَقَالَ لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ قَالَ فَسَمِعْتُهُ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ قَالَ فَلَامَنِي نَاسٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ قَالَ وَجَاءَ هُوَ فَحَلَفَ مَا قَالَ ذَاكَ فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى الْمَنْزِلِ فَنِمْتُ قَالَ فَأَتَانِي رَسُولُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ بَلَغَنِي فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ قَدْ صَدَّقَكَ وَعَذَرَكَ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ} [المنافقون 7]

قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةٍ فَقَالَ عَبد اللَّهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الأَذَلَّ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ لِي قَوْمِي مَا أَرَدْتُ إِلَى هَذَا فَرَجَعْتُ فَنِمْتُ كئيباًحزيناً وَجَاءَ عَبد اللَّهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ فَحَلَفَ فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى النَّبِيّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ صَدَّقَكَ وَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى { هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لاَ تُنفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِندَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يَنفَضُّوا وَلِلَّهِ خَزَائِنُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ وَلَكِنَّ المُنَافِقِينَ لاَ يَفْقَهُونَ} وَهَذَا الْكَلامُ لا نعلَمُ أحَدًا يَرْوِيهِ إلاَّ زَيْدُ بْنُ أَرْقَمَ ولاَ نَعْلَمُ أَسْنَدَ مُحَمد بْنُ كَعْبٍ عَن زَيْدٍ غَيْرَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ ولاَ أَسْنَدَ أَبُو سَعْد عَن زَيد غَيْرَ هذا الحديث

[AI] I heard Abdullah bin Ubayy ibn Salul saying, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse." So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him, and Ibn Ubayy came to him and swore that he did not say that. Then the companions of the Prophet ﷺ blamed me, so I went to my house and slept. He said, "It seemed as if he was distraught." So the Prophet ﷺ sent for me, and I came to him or he said: "I came to the Prophet ﷺ." He said, "Indeed, Allah has confirmed your statement and excused you." And he recited to me the following verses: "They are the ones who say, 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah'." And he recited these two verses until he concluded them.

سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أُبَيٍّ ابْنِ سَلُولَ يَقُولُ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ وَأَتَاهُ ابْنُ أُبِيٍّ فَحَلَفَ لَهُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقُلْ ذَلِكَ وَأَتَانِي أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلَامُونِي فَأَتَيْتُ مَنْزِلِي فَنِمْتُ قَالَ كَأَنَّهُ كَئِيبٌ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَتَيْتُهُ أَوْ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ صَدَّقَكَ وَعَذَرَكَ» وَتَلَا هَاتَيْنِ الْآتَيْنِ {هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ} حَتَّى خَتَمَ الْآيَتَيْنِ

سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ أُبَيِّ بْنِ سَلُولٍ يَقُولُ {لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا} فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ وَأَتَاهُ ابْنُ أُبَيٍّ فَحَلَفَ لَهُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَقُلْ قَالَ فَأَتَانِي أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَلَامُونِي فَأَتَيْتُ مَنْزِلِي فَنِمْتُ قَالَ كَأَنَّهُ كَئِيبٌ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَتَيْتُهُ أَوْ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ صَدَّقَكَ وَعَذَرَكَ» وَتَلَا هَاتَيْنِ الْآيَتَيْنِ {هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ} حَتَّى خَتَمَ الْآيَتَيْنِ

[AI] Abdullah ibn Ubayy said, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse." He also said, "If we return to Medina, the more honorable will expel the lowly from it." I informed the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , about this, and I went to him. He said, "Verily, Allah has confirmed and excused you, and He has revealed the verse, 'They are the ones who say, 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse''" (Quran 63:7).
