٧٢۔ كتاب الذبائح والصيد

72.12 "Lawful to you is water-game and its use for food .... For the benefit of yourselves

٧٢۔١٢ باب قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى {أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ صَيْدُ الْبَحْرِ}

[Machine] "And 'Umar said, 'My hunting is not what I catch, but what I throw with.' And Abu Bakr said, 'The tafi is permissible.' And Ibn 'Abbas said, 'Its food is its dead except what you have purified from it, and the jirriyyah, the Jews do not eat it, but we eat it.' And Shurayh, the companion of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , said, 'Everything in the sea is considered slaughtered.' And 'Ata said, 'As for birds, I believe they should be slaughtered.' And Ibn Jurayj said, 'I said to 'Ata, 'I hunt from rivers and rare floods, should I hunt from the sea too?' He said, 'Yes.' Then he recited, 'This is sweet, palatable water, and this is salty, bitter water, and from each you eat tender flesh.' And Al-Hasan rode on a saddle made of the skins of water dogs. And Ash-Sha'bi said, 'If my family ate frogs, I would feed them.' And Al-Hasan did not consider the turtle harmful. And Ibn 'Abbas said, 'Every sea catch that was caught by a Christian, Jew, or Magian is permissible.' And Abu ad-Darda' said about murree, 'He slaughtered wine, the palm tree, and the sun.'"

We went out in a campaign and the army was called The Army of the Khabt, and Abu 'Ubaida was our commander. We were struck with severe hunger. Then the sea threw a huge dead fish called Al- ʿAnbar, the like of which had never been seen. We ate of it for half a month, and then Abu 'Ubaida took one of its bones (and made an arch of it) so that a rider could easily pass under it.

The Prophet ﷺ sent us as an army unit of three hundred warriors under the command of Abu 'Ubaida to ambush a caravan of the Quraish. But we were struck with such severe hunger that we ate the Khabt (desert bushes), so our army was called the Army of the Khabt. Then the sea threw a huge fish called Al-ʿAnbar and we ate of it for half a month and rubbed our bodies with its fat till our bodies became healthy. Then Abu Ubaida took one of its ribs and fixed it over the ground and a rider passed underneath it. There was a man amongst us who slaughtered three camels when hunger became severe, and he slaughtered three more, but after that Abu 'Ubaida forbade him to do so.
