[Machine] ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān wrote to al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf instructing him not to oppose ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar in matters of the Ḥajj. When the Day of ʿArafah came, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar came to him when the sun had passed its zenith and called out at the entrance of his pavilion, “Set out!” Al-Ḥajjāj came out to him wearing a safflower-dyed cloak and said, “At this hour?” He replied, “Yes.” He said, “Wait for me until I pour water over myself,” then went in and bathed. Then he came out and rode between me and my father. I said to him, “If you want to follow the Sunnah today, then shorten the sermon and hasten the prayer.” He began looking toward ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar so that he might hear that from him, and ʿAbd Allāh said, “He has spoken the truth.” (The wording is that of the report of Ibn Bukayr.)
