"The method of istinja' (cleansing after using the toilet) is with three stones or with three sticks. I asked, 'What if I can't find them?' He said, 'Three handfuls of soil will suffice.' This is the correct view according to a statement attributed to Ta'us."  

البيهقي:٥٣٧أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ الْفَقِيهُ نا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ نا أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا هُشَيْمٌ ثنا أَبُو بِشْرٌ عَنْ طَاؤُسٍ ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو حَازِمٍ الْحَافِظُ نا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ بْنُ إسحاق الْحَافِظُ أنا أَبُو إسحاق إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْعُمَرِيُّ بِالْكُوفَةِ ثنا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ نا هُشَيْمٌ عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ عَنْ طَاؤسٍ قَالَ

الِاسْتِنْجَاءُ بِثَلَاثَةِ أَحْجَارٍ أَوْ بِثَلَاثَةِ أَعْوَادٍ قُلْتُ فَإِنْ لَمْ أَجِدْ؟ قَالَ ثَلَاثُ حَفَنَاتٍ مِنَ التُّرَابِ هَذَا هُوَ الصَّحِيحُ عَنْ طَاؤسٍ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ وَكَذَلِكَ
