[Machine] Return to them and ask them about what led them to do what they did. So, I went back to them and asked them, and they said, "We seek the Sunnah." He said, "Go back to them and inform them that it is an innovation, and Imam Ash-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, pointed out that the narrated sleeping in past reports is for distinguishing between the optional and obligatory prayers. It does not matter whether this distinction is made by sleeping, reporting, or moving from that place or elsewhere. Sleeping is not necessary for that, and Allah knows best.  

البيهقي:٤٨٩٥أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ جَنَاحُ بْنُ نُذَيْرِ بْنِ جَنَاحٍ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ بِالْكُوفَةِ أنبأ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ دُحَيْمٍ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَازِمِ بْنِ أَبِي غَرَزَةَ ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا مِسْعَرٌ عَنْ زَيْدٍ الْعَمِّيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الصِّدِّيقِ النَّاجِي قَالَ رَأَى عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ قَوْمًا قَدِ اضْطَجَعُوا بَعْدَ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ فَقَالَ

ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهِمْ فَسَلْهُمْ مَا حَمَلَهُمْ عَلَى مَا صَنَعُوا فَأَتَيْتُهُمْ وَسَأَلْتُهُمْ فَقَالُوا نُرِيدُ السُّنَّةَ قَالَ ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهِمْ فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّهَا بِدْعَةٌ وَقَدْ أَشَارَ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ تَعَالَى إِلَى أَنَّ الِاضْطِجَاعَ الْمُنْقُولَ فِيمَا مَضَى مِنَ الْأَخْبَارِ لِلْفَصْلِ بَيْنَ النَّافِلَةِ وَالْفَرِيضَةِ ثُمَّ سَوَاءٌ كَانَ ذَلِكَ الْفَصْلُ بِالِاضْطِجَاعِ أَوِ التَّحْدِيثِ أَوِ التَّحَوُّلِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْمَكَانِ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ وَالِاضْطِجَاعُ غَيْرُ مُتَعَيِّنٍ لِذَلِكَ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ
