[Machine] That two of the companions of Muhammad ﷺ disagree on one thing, from which of your opinions would people benefit? As for Ibn Mas'ood, he did not prefer what Ubayy said. Abu Mas'ood al-Jurrayri narrated it from Abu Nadrah without mentioning Umar. Ibn Mas'ood then said, "This is only the case when there are few garments. But if Allah has given abundance, praying in two clean garments is better. This, along with what came before it, indicates that what Umar and Ibn Mas'ood commanded regarding praying in two garments is recommended, not obligatory."
أَنْ يَخْتَلِفَ اثْنَانِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ فِي شَيْءٍ وَاحِدٍ فَعَنْ أَيِّ فُتْيَاكُمَا يَصْدُرُ النَّاسُ؟ أَمَّا ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فَلَمْ يَأْلُ وَالْقَوْلُ مَا قَالَ أُبَيٌّ وَرَوَاهُ أَبُو مَسْعُودٍ الْجُرَيْرِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ دُونَ ذِكْرِ عُمَرَ وَقَالَ فَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ إِنَّمَا كَانَ ذَلِكَ إِذَا كَانَ فِي الثِّيَابِ قِلَّةٌ فَأَمَّا إِذَا وَسَّعَ اللهُ فَالصَّلَاةُ فِي ثَوْبَيْنِ أَزْكَى وَهَذَا وَالَّذِي قَبْلَهُ يَدُلَّانِ عَلَى أَنَّ لِلَّذِي أَمَرَ بِهِ عُمَرُ وَابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فِي ثَوْبَيْنِ اسْتِحْبَابٌ لَا إِيجَابٌ
