[Machine] ﷺ He used to strike in gambling with sandals and palm branches a total of forty. Abu Bakr struck forty. When Umar became caliph, he was asked about that, so Umar consulted with them and Ibn Awf said, "I think he should be struck eighty times." So he struck him eighty times.  

البيهقي:١٧٥٣٣وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْحِيرِيُّ أنبأ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا وَكِيعٌ عَنْ هِشَامٍ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ

ﷺ كَانَ يَضْرِبُ فِي الْخَمْرِ بِالنِّعَالِ وَالْجَرِيدِ أَرْبَعِينَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ ضَرَبَ أَرْبَعِينَ فَلَمَّا وَلِيَ عُمَرُ ؓ سُئِلَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَشَاوَرَهُمْ عُمَرُ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَوْفٍ ؓ أَرَى أَنْ تَضْرِبَهُ ثَمَانِينَ فَضَرَبَهُ ثَمَانِينَ
