“The Prophet ﷺ used to observe I’tikaf for ten days every year. In the year in which he passed away, he observed I’tikaf for twenty days. And the Qur’an would be reviewed with him once every year, but in the year in which he passed away, it was reviewed with him twice.”

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَعْتَكِفُ كُلَّ عَامٍ عَشْرَةَ أَيَّامٍ فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْعَامُ الَّذِي قُبِضَ فِيهِ اعْتَكَفَ عِشْرِينَ يَوْمًا وَكَانَ يُعْرَضُ عَلَيْهِ الْقُرْآنُ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ مَرَّةً فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْعَامُ الَّذِي قُبِضَ فِيهِ عُرِضَ عَلَيْهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ

[AI] Which of the two recitations was the last, Abdullah's recitation or Zaid's recitation? He said, we said, Zaid's recitation. He said, no, indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite the Qur'an to Gabriel once every year. But in the year he passed away, he recited it to him twice. And Abdullah's recitation was the last recitation.

أَيُّ الْقِرَاءَتَيْنِ كَانَتْ أَخِيرًا قِرَاءَةُ عَبْدِاللهِ أَوْ قِرَاءَةُ زَيْدٍ؟ قَالَ قُلْنَا قِرَاءَةُ زَيْدٍ قَالَ لَا إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَعْرِضُ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى جَبْرَيلَ كُلَّ عَامٍ مَرَّةً فَلَمَّا كَانَ فِي الْعَامِ الَّذِي قُبِضَ فِيهِ عَرَضَهُ عَلَيْهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ وَكَانَتْ آخِرَ الْقِرَاءَةِ قِرَاءَةُ عَبْدِ اللهِ

[AI] Which recitation do you consider to be the first? They said the recitation of Abdullah. He said, no, rather it is the "Akhirah" (the last recitation). The Quran used to be presented to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once every year. But in the year in which he died, it was presented to him twice. Abdullah witnessed this and knew what was abrogated from it and what was substituted.

أَيُّ الْقِرَاءَتَيْنِ تَعُدُّونَ أَوَّلَ؟ قَالُوا قِرَاءَةَ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ لَا بَلْ هِيَ الْآخِرَةُ كَانَ يُعْرَضُ الْقُرْآنُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ مَرَّةً فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْعَامُ الَّذِي قُبِضَ فِيهِ عُرِضَ عَلَيْهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ فَشَهِدَهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ فَعَلِمَ مَا نُسِخَ مِنْهُ وَمَا بُدِّلَ

[AI] The Quran was presented to the Prophet ﷺ once every year. However, in the year before he passed away, it was presented to him twice.

كَانَ يُعْرَضُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ الْقُرْآنَ فِي كُلِّ سَنَةٍ مَرَّةً فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْعَامُ الَّذِي قُبِضَ فِيهِ عُرِضَ عَلَيْهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ

[AI] Which of the two readings do you see as the last? They said, the reading of Zaid. He said, no. "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to present the Quran to Gabriel every year, and when it was the year in which he passed away, he presented it to him twice. So, the last one was the reading of Ibn Mas'ud."

أَيُّ الْقِرَاءَتَيْنِ تَرَوْنَ كَانَ آخِرَ الْقِرَاءَةِ؟ قَالُوا قِرَاءَةُ زَيْدٍ قَالَ لَا «إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَعْرِضُ الْقُرْآنَ كُلَّ سَنَةٍ عَلَى جِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ فَلَمَّا كَانَتِ السَّنَةُ الَّتِي قُبِضَ فِيهَا عَرَضَهُ عَلَيْهِ عَرْضَتَيْنِ فَكَانَتْ قِرَاءَةُ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ آخِرَهُنَّ»

“The Prophet ﷺ used to observe I’tikaf for ten days every year. In the year in which he passed away, he observed I’tikaf for twenty days. [AI] Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to review the Quran every year, and it was reviewed twice in the year he passed away. Abdullah witnessed what was repealed.

إِنَّ «رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يعْرِضُ الْقُرْآنَ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ مَرَّةً وَإِنَّهُ عُرِضَ عَلَيْهِ فِي الْعَامِ الَّذِي قُبِضَ فِيهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ فَشَهِدَ عَبْدُ اللهِ مَا نُسِخَ»
