Three things loved by Allah and three that are disliked by Him

ahmad:21530Yazīd > al-Aswad b. Shaybān > Yazīd Abū al-ʿAlāʾ > Muṭarrif b. ʿAbdullāh b. al-Shikhhīr > Abū Dharr

I used to love to meet him, so I met him and said to him, "O Abu Dharr, tell me something about yourself that I may love to meet you and ask you about it." He said, "You have already met, so ask." I said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'There are three whom Allah loves and three whom Allah hates.'" He said, "Yes, what prevents me from lying about my beloved Muhammad ﷺ three times."

I said, "Who are the three whom Allah loves?" He said, "(1) A man who fights in the way of Allah, meeting the enemy as a fighter, hoping for reward, until he is killed. And you find in the Book of Allah, 'Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause as if they are a compacted structure.' (2) And a man who has a neighbor who harms him, and he endures and seeks reward from Allah until Allah suffices him of it with death or life. (3) And a man who joins a group and practices with them until it becomes burdensome for them, so they camp at the end of the night, then he stands up for his ablution and prayer."

I said, "Who are the three whom Allah hates?" He said, "(1) The arrogant, boastful person. And you find in the Book of Allah, 'Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.' (2) The stingy, miserly person. (3) And the deceitful businessman."

I said, "O Abu Dharr, what about wealth?" He said, "It is a means for us to divide and taste, meaning that we divide a small herd of sheep." I said, "I am not asking about this. I am only asking you about the silent wealth." He said, "I neither have morning nor evening, and what is evening is not morning." I said, "O Abu Dharr, what about you and your Quraishi brothers?" He said, "By Allah, I do not ask them for the world, nor do I seek their advice about the religion of Allah until I meet Allah and His Messenger three times and say these words."

[Machine] "From Abu Dharr, a Hadith: I desired to meet him, so I met him and said, 'O Abu Dharr, I used to hear a Hadith about you, and I desired to meet you.' He said, 'To Allah be your father. For indeed, you have met me.' I said, 'Tell me; it has reached me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrated something to you.' He said, 'Indeed, Allah loves three and dislikes three.' I said, 'Do not lie to your friend.' He said, 'I speak the truth. The man who fights in the cause of Allah steadfastly and hoping for His reward, the one who fights until he is killed, and you find him among you in the Book of Allah, revealed, reads this verse, "Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly" [Surah As-Saff: 4]. I said, 'Who else?' He said, 'The one who has a neighbor who harms him, yet he bears with patience and endures until Allah suffices him either with life or death.' I said, 'Who else?' He said, 'The man who travels with a group, and they suffer from severe hardship until, when they are afflicted by the darkness and drowsiness [of the night], they strike their heads [against the ground] for seeking the pleasure of Allah and hoping for what He has in store for them.' I said, 'Who are the three that Allah dislikes?' He said, 'The arrogant, conceited person, and you find him in the Book of Allah, revealed, reads this verse, "Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful" [Surah Luqman: 18].' I said, 'Who else?' He said, 'The miser who denies and withholds.' I said, 'Who else?' He said, 'The smooth-talker merchant or the persuasive salesman.'"

[Machine] On the authority of Abu Dharr, the following hadith was narrated to me: I longed to meet him, so I met him and said, "O Abu Dharr, there used to be a hadith that reached me about you, so I longed to meet you." He replied, "By Allah, you have met me. What do you want?" I said, "There is a hadith that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrate to you." He said, "Indeed, Allah loves three and dislikes three." I said, "May I be mentioned as lying about the Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Say it." So I asked, "Who are the three that Allah loves?" He said, "A man who fights in the cause of Allah with perseverance and expectation of reward, even if he is killed. And you find him in the Book of Allah: 'Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly' (Quran 61:4)." Then he recited this verse: "Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly" (Quran 61:4). I asked, "And who are they?" He replied, "A man who has a bad neighbor who harms him, but he bears it with patience until Allah relieves him from him in this life or the next." I asked, "And who are they?" He replied, "A man who travels with a group until they stop to rest at the end of the night, then they are struck by a drowsiness or fatigue, so they strike their heads. Then he wakes up and performs ablution out of desire for Allah and out of his need for it." I asked, "And who are the three that Allah dislikes?" He replied, "The miserly, the arrogant, and you find them in the Book of Allah: 'Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful' (Quran 31:18)." I asked, "And who are they?" He replied, "The merchant who is deceitful or the buyer who is deceitful." I said, "I do not know which one." Abu Dharr said, "O Abu Dharr, what is wealth?" He replied, "It is a loss for us and a taste." I said, "O Abu Dharr, that is not what I am asking you. I am only asking you about the one who keeps his wealth silent." He replied, "He does not find himself in the morning or the evening. I said, "What about you and your brothers from the Quraysh?" He replied, "By Allah, I do not ask them about religion, nor do I ask them about this worldly life, until I meet Allah and His Messenger." He repeated this statement three times.

[Machine] Narrated by Abu Dharr, I had a strong desire to meet the Prophet, so I met him and said, "O Abu Dharr, he used to inform me about you. I had a strong desire to meet you." He replied, "May Allah be your Guardian, you have indeed met me. So what news did you receive that you convey to us?" I said, "I received a narration that you mentioned that Allah loves three things and dislikes three things." He said, "What hinders me from speaking the truth about my dear friend, the Prophet?" I asked, "So who are the three that Allah loves?" He replied, "A man who confronts the enemy and fights for the sake of Allah, and indeed, you will find this in the Book, 'Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row.' (Quran 61:4)" I inquired, "And who else?" He said, "A person who has an evil neighbor, but endures his harm, and Allah suffices him either in his life or in his death." I asked, "And who else?" He replied, "A man who is on a journey with a group of people. They stop to rest, and are afflicted with fatigue and drowsiness, so they lay their heads down to sleep. One of them wakes up and performs ablution for the sake and pleasure of Allah, then he stands up in prayer." I questioned, "So who are the three that Allah dislikes?" He answered, "The mischievous miser, the proud arrogant person, and indeed, you will find this in the Book, 'Indeed, Allah does not love everyone self-deluded and boastful.' (Quran 31:18)" I asked, "So who is the third?" He replied, "The dishonest merchant or the seller of false goods."
