ahmad:17334Abū al-Mughīrah > Muʿān b. Rifāʿah > ʿAlī b. Yazīd > al-Qāsim > Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī > ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir

I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so I approached him. He then grabbed me by my hand and said: I said, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, what is the salvation of a believer? He said, "O ʿUqbah! Guard your tongue, let your house be big enough for you, and cry over your sins."

He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met me then approached me and grabbed me by my hand then said, "O ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir! Shall I not teach you the best of three Sūrahs revealed in the Torah, Gospel, and the Great Quran?" He said, I said: Certainly, may Allah ˹allow˺ me to be sacrificed for you. He said, "The recite for me 'Say, He is Allah, the One Absolutely Unique.' (Ikhlāṣ 112:1), and 'Say, I seek refuge from the Lord of the daybreak.' (Falaq 113:1), and 'Say, I seek refuge from the Lord of humankind.' (Nās 114:1)'" Then he said, "O ʿUqbah! Do not forget them and do not let a night pass by until you recite them." He then said: I did not ever forget since he told me "Do not forget them," and no night ever passed me by until I recited them.

ʿUqbah said: Then I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I approached him. Then I grabbed a hold of his hand and said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, inform me about virtuous deeds. Then he said, "O ʿUqbah! Tie back ˹ties of kinship˺ with the one who cuts it off, ˹continue to˺ give to the one who prevents you from having, and leave alone the one who wrongs you."

Councils to ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir

ahmad:17452Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad > Ibn ʿAyyāsh > Asīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥman al-Khathʿamī > Farwah b. Mujāhid al-Lakhmī > ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir

that I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said to me, "O ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir! Tie back ˹ties of kinship˺ with the one who cuts it off, give to the one who prevents you from having, and forgive the one who wrongs you."

He said that then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said to me, "O ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir! Control your tongue, cry over your sins, and let your house be big enough for you."

He said that then I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said to me, "O ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir! Shall I not teach you the Sūrahs that such were not revealed in the Torah, nor in the Psalms, and not in the Gospel? Do not let a night go by without reciting 'Say, He is Allah, the One Absolutely Unique.' (Ikhlāṣ 112:1), and 'Say, I seek refuge from the Lord of the daybreak.' (Falaq 113:1), and 'Say, I seek refuge from the Lord of humankind.' (Nās 114:1)" ʿUqbah said that never a night went by and I did not recite them, and I was obliged to supplicate through them since the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me to do so.

and Furwah b. Mujāhid, when he narrated this ḥadīth, used to say, "Alas! how unfortunate is he who does not have control over his own tongue nor cry over his sins, not let his house be big enough for him."
