The Prophet ﷺ used to pray eight rakʿahs of voluntary prayer and during the day twelve rakʿahs.  

أحمد:١٢٦١ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ خُثَيْمٍ أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ الْهِلالِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ ضَمْرَةَ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُصَلِّي مِنَ التَّطَوُّعِ ثَمَانِيَ رَكَعَاتٍ وَبِالنَّهَارِ ثِنْتَيْ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً
