We were with ‘Ali ؓ when a funeral passed by him and some people stood up for it. ‘Ali ؓ said: Who told you to do this? They said: Abu Moosa, He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ only did that once, following the example of the People of the Book, but when he was forbidden to do it, he stopped.  

أحمد:١٢٠٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ لَيْثٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي مَعْمَرٍ قَالَ

كُنَّا مَعَ عَلِيٍّ فَمَرَّ بِهِ جَنَازَةٌ فَقَامَ لَهَا نَاسٌ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ مَنْ أَفْتَاكُمْ هَذَا؟ فَقَالُوا أَبُو مُوسَى قَالَ إِنَّمَا فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَرَّةً فَكَانَ يَتَشَبَّهُ بِأَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ فَلَمَّا نُهِيَ انْتَهَى
