ahmad-zuhd:270ʿAbdullāh > Bī > Yazīd b. Hārūn > Abū al-Ashhab > Muḥammad b. Wāsiʿ

[Machine] Luqman, ﷺ , used to say to his son, "O my son, fear Allah and do not show people that you fear Allah, so that they may honor you for it, while your heart is sinful."  

الزهد لأحمد:٢٧٠حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أبِي حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَنْبَأَنَا أَبُو الْأَشْهَبِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ وَاسِعٍ قَالَ

كَانَ لُقْمَانُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ يَقُولُ لِابْنِهِ «يَا بُنَيَّ اتَّقِ اللَّهَ وَلَا تُرِ النَّاسَ أَنَّكَ تَخْشَى اللَّهَ ﷻ؛ لِيُكْرِمُوكَ بِذَلِكَ وَقَلْبُكَ فَاجِرٌ»
