ahmad-zuhd:1529ʿAbdullāh > Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Azdī > Saʿīd b. ʿĀmir from his grandfather Asmāʾ b. ʿAbd > al-Ḥasan

[Machine] There was a man from the Muslims who would be informed of the death of a brother from his brothers, so he would say, "Indeed, we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we shall return. I almost thought that I would be the one taken (by death)." So Allah would increase him in that fervor and effort, and he would remain in that state as long as Allah willed, until he died a good death.  

الزهد لأحمد:١٥٢٩حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْأَزْدِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ عَنْ جَدِّهِ أَسْمَاءَ بْنِ عَبْدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

كَانَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ يَبْلُغُهُ مَوْتُ أَخٍ مِنْ إِخْوَانِهِ فَيَقُولُ إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ كِدْتُ وَاللَّهِ أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنَا السَّوَادُ الْمُخْتَطَفُ فَيَزِيدُهُ اللَّهُ بِذَلِكَ جِدًّا وَاجْتِهَادًا فَيَلْبَثُ بِذَلِكَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ يَبْلُغُهُ مَوْتُ الْأَخِ مِنْ إِخْوَانِهِ فَيَقُولُ إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ كِدْتُ وَاللَّهِ أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنَا السَّوَادُ الْمُخْتَطَفُ فَيَزِيدُهُ اللَّهُ بِذَلِكَ جَدًّا وَاجْتِهَادًا قَالَ فَرَدَّدَ الْحَسَنُ هَذَا الْكَلَامَ غَيْرَ مَرَّةٍ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا زَالَ كَذَلِكَ حَتَّى مَاتَ مَوْتًا كَيِّسًا
