[Machine] I said to him, "What is the punishment for a scholar?" He replied, "The death of the heart." I asked, "And what is the death of the heart?" He said, "Seeking worldly gains through deeds meant for the hereafter."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٤٩٨حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبَانَ بْنِ صَالِحِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُبَارَكٌ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ شَيْخٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ

قُلْتُ لَهُ مَا عُقُوبَةُ الْعَالِمِ؟ قَالَ «مَوْتُ الْقَلْبِ» قُلْتُ وَمَا مَوْتُ الْقَلْبِ؟ قَالَ «طَلَبُ الدُّنْيَا بِعَمَلِ الْآخِرَةِ»
