Anas b. Malik reported that Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the best amongst people in disposition and behaviour.

(622) bukhari:1825ʿAbdullāh b. Yūsuf > Mālik > Ibn Shihāb > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUtbah b. Masʿūd > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbbās > al-Ṣaʿb b. Jathhāmah al-Laythī

From As-Sa'b bin Jath-thama Al-Laithi that the latter presented an onager to Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at Al-Abwa' or at Waddan, and he refused it. On noticing the signs of some unpleasant feeling of disappointment on his (As-Sab's) face, the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "I have only returned it because I am Muhrim."

(622) bukhari:2573Ismāʿīl > Mālik > Ibn Shihāb > ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUtbah b. Masʿūd > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbbās > al-Ṣaʿb b. Jathhāmah

An onager was presented to Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the place called Al-Abwa' or Waddan, but Allah's Apostle rejected it. When the Prophet ﷺ noticed the signs of sorrow on the giver's face he said, "We have not rejected your gift, but we are in the state of Ihram." (i.e. if we were not in a state of Ihram we would have accepted your gift, Fath-ul-Bari page 130, Vol. 6)

(623) muslim:2553bHārūn b. Saʿīd al-Aylī > ʿAbdullāh b. Wahb > Muʿāwiyah / Ibn Ṣāliḥ > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. Jubayr b. Nufayr from his father > Nawwās b. Simʿān

I stayed with Messenger of Allah ﷺ for one year. What obstructed me to migrate was (nothing) but (persistent) inquiries from him (about Islam). (It was a common observation) that when anyone of us migrated (to Medina) he ceased to ask (too many questions) from Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So I asked him about virtue and vice. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Virtue is a kind disposition and vice is what rankles in your mind and that you disapprove of its being known to the people.

(624) bukhari:3559ʿAbdān > Abū Ḥamzah > al-Aʿmash > Abū Wāʾil > Masrūq > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr

The Prophet ﷺ never used bad language neither a "Fahish nor a Mutafahish. He used to say "The best amongst you are those who have the best manners and character." (See Hadith No. 56 (B) Vol. 8)

The best among your are the ones of the best character

(624) bukhari:6029Ḥafṣ b. ʿUmar > Shuʿbah > Sulaymān > Abū Wāʾil > Masrūq > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr > Qutaybah > Jarīr > al-Aʿmash > Shaqīq b. Salamah > Masrūq

Abdullah bin 'Amr mentioned Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying that he was neither a Fahish nor a Mutafahish. Abdullah bin 'Amr added, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The best among you are those who have the best manners and character.'

(624) bukhari:6035ʿUmar b. Ḥafṣ from my father > al-Aʿmash > Shaqīq > Masrūq

We were sitting with ʿAbdullah bin ʿAmr who was narrating to us (Hadith): He said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ was neither a Fahish nor a Mutafahhish, and he used to say, 'The best among you are the best in character (having good manners)."'

Good character is the heaviest on the scale

(625) tirmidhi:2002Ibn Abū ʿUmar > Sufyān > ʿAmr b. Dīnār > Ibn Abū Mulaykah > Yaʿlá b. Mamlak > Um al-Dardāʾ > Abū al-Dardāʾ

"Nothing is heavier on the believer's Scale on the Day of Judgment than good character. For indeed Allah, Most High, is angered by the shameless obscene person."

(626) tirmidhi:2004Abū Kurayb Muḥammad b. al-ʿAlāʾ > ʿAbdullāh b. Idrīs from my father from my father > Abū Hurayrah

The Messenger of Allah was asked about that for which people are admitted into Paradise the most and he said, "Conciousness of Allah, and good character." And he was asked about that for which people are admitted into the Fire the most, and he said, "The mouth and the private parts."

The Prophet ﷺ said: I guarantee a house in the surroundings of Paradise for a man who avoids quarrelling even if he were in the right, a house in the middle of Paradise for a man who avoids lying even if he were joking, and a house in the upper part of Paradise for a man who made his character good.

"Indeed the most beloved among you to me, and the nearest to sit with me on the Day of Judgment is the best of you in character. And indeed, the most disliked among you to me, and the one sitting furthest from me on the Day of Judgement are the tharthārūn (overbearingly talkative), and the mutashaddiqūn (scandal spreaders) and the muthafayhiqūn." They said: "O Messenger of Allah! We know about the tharthārūn, and the mutashaddiqūn, but what about the muthafayhiqūn?"' He said:"The arrogant."
