Abu Sufyan bin Abu Zuhair, a man from Azd Shanu'a and one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ said, "I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'If one keeps a dog which is meant for guarding neither a farm nor cattle, one Qirat of the reward of his good deeds is deducted daily." I said, "Did you hear this from Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "Yes, by the Lord of this Mosque."

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سُفْيَانَ بْنَ أَبِي زُهَيْرٍ رَجُلاً مِنْ أَزْدِ شَنُوءَةَ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لاَ يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلاَ ضَرْعًا نَقَصَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ قِيرَاطٌ قُلْتُ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِي وَرَبِّ هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ

That he heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "If somebody keeps a dog that is neither used for farm work nor for guarding the livestock, he will lose one Qirat (of the reward) of his good deeds everyday."

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لاَ يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلاَ ضَرْعًا نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ فَقَالَ السَّائِبُ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِيْ وَرَبِّ هَذِهِ الْقِبْلَةِ

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If someone keeps a dog neither for guarding livestock, nor for hunting, his good deeds will decrease (in reward) by two Qirats a day.'

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا إِلاَّ كَلْبَ مَاشِيَةٍ أَوْ ضَارٍ نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطَانِ

He who keeps a dog other than that meant for watching the herd or for hunting loses every day out of his deeds equal to two qirat.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا إِلاَّ كَلْبَ مَاشِيَةٍ أَوْ ضَارِي نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطَانِ

Ibn 'Umar reported Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying He who kept a dog other than one meant for hunting or for watching the herd lost out of his deeds (equal to) two qirat every day.

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا إِلاَّ كَلْبَ ضَارِيَةٍ أَوْ مَاشِيَةٍ نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطَانِ

I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: He who kept a dog (other than that) which is indispensable for watching the field or the animals would lose one qirat out of his deeds every day. As-Sa'ib b Yazid (one of the narrators) said: Did you hear it from Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: Yes. by the Lord of this mosque.

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سُفْيَانَ بْنَ أَبِي زُهَيْرٍ وَهُوَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ شَنُوءَةَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لاَ يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلاَ ضَرْعًا نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ قَالَ آنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ إِي وَرَبِّ هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ

"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever keeps a dog which he does not need for farming or livestock, one Qirt will be deducted from his (good) deeds each day.' It was said to him: 'did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah He said: 'Yes, by the Lord of this Masjid."'

وَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لاَ يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلاَ ضَرْعًا نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ قُلْتُ يَا سُفْيَانُ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَرَبِّ هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ

“I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘Whoever keeps a dog that he does not need for farming or herding, one Qirat will be deducted from his (good) deeds each day.’”

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لاَ يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلاَ ضَرْعًا نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ فَقِيلَ لَهُ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ إِي وَرَبِّ هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَنْ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا إِلَّا كَلْبَ صَيْدٍ أَوْ مَاشِيَةٍ نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطَانِ»

“I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘Whoever keeps a dog that he does not need for farming or herding, one Qirat will be deducted from his (good) deeds each day.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3206)

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنْ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلَا ضَرْعًا نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ» قَالُوا أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ إِي وَرَبِّ هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Whoever keeps a dog, one Qirat will be deducted from him (good) deeds every day, except a dog for farming or herding livestock.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3204)

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا إِلَّا كَلْبَ ضَارٍ أَوْ كَلْبَ مَاشِيَةٍ نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطَانِ

“I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘Whoever keeps a dog that he does not need for farming or herding, one Qirat will be deducted from his (good) deeds each day.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3206)

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَّهُ قَالَ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لَا يُغْنِي مِنْ زَرْعٍ أَوْ ضَرْعٍ نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ قَالَ السَّائِبُ فَقُلْتُ لِسُفْيَانَ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَرَبِّ هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ

[AI] "He informed him that he heard Sufyan ibn Abi Zuhair, who was a man from the noble companions of the Prophet ﷺ , talking to people at the door of the mosque, saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: Whoever keeps a dog that is not a hunting or herding dog, will have a portion of his good deeds deducted every day by a Qirat. He asked: Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ? He replied: Yes, by the Lord of this mosque."

أَنَّهُ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سُفْيَانَ بْنَ أَبِي زُهَيْرٍ وَهُوَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ شَنُوءَةَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ يُحَدِّثُ نَاسًا مَعَهُ عِنْدَ بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلَا ضَرْعًا نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ قَالَ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ إِي وَرَبِّ هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ

Malik related to me from Yazid ibn Khusayfa that as-Sa'ib ibn Yazid informed him that he heard Sufyan ibn Abi Zuhayr who was from the Azd Shanua tribe and among the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ speaking with some people who were with him at the door of the mosque. He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'If anyone acquires a dog which he does not use as a sheepdog or for hunting, a qirat will be deducted from the reward of his good deeds each day.' " He was asked, "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "Yes, by the Lord of this mosque."

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سُفْيَانَ بْنَ أَبِي زُهَيْرٍ وَهُوَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَزْدِ شَنُوءَةَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يُحَدِّثُ نَاسًا مَعَهُ عِنْدَ بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لاَ يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلاَ ضَرْعًا نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ قَالَ آنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِي وَرَبِّ هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ

[AI] Al-Qa'nabi narrated from Malik, who narrated from Bakr bin Sahl, who narrated from Abdullah bin Yusuf, who said that Malik narrated from Yazid bin Khusaifah that the Sa'ib bin Yazid informed him that he heard Sufyan bin Abi Zuhair, a man from Azd Shanu'ah and a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , speaking to people at the gate of the mosque, saying, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Whoever keeps a dog that is not used for herding or guarding, it reduces his good deeds every day by a qirat.'" He (Yazid) asked, "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He replied, "Yes, I swear by the Lord of the Ka'bah."

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ أنا مَالِكٌ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ خُصَيْفَةَ أَنَّ السَّائِبَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سُفْيَانَ بْنَ أَبِي زُهَيْرٍ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَزْدِ شَنُوءَةَ وَهُوَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يُحَدِّثُ نَاسًا عِنْدَ بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلَا ضَرْعًا نَقُصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ» قَالَ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ إِي وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ

[AI] Al-Qa'bi narrated that Sulaiman bin Bilal narrated from Yazid bin Khusaifah, from As-Sa'ib bin Yazid, that Sufyan bin Abi Zuhair informed him that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Whoever keeps a dog that is not used for hunting or farming, a portion of his good deeds will be deducted every day by a Qira'at." As-Sa'ib (i.e. Sufyan) asked, "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He replied, "Yes, by the Lord of the Ka'bah."

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ بِلَالٍ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ خُصَيْفَةَ عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ أَنَّ سُفْيَانَ بْنَ أَبِي زُهَيْرٍ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلَا ضَرْعًا نَقُصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ» قَالَ السَّائِبُ أَيْ سُفْيَانَ أَسَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ إِي وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever acquires a dog, his reward will be reduced by a Qirat."

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا فَإِنَّهُ يَنْقُصُ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ قِيرَاطٌ»

[AI] "And Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz and Abu Nasser al-Faqih al-Shirazi told us, they said: Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, from Abu Abdullah al-Marwazi and Ja'far ibn Muhammad. They said: Yahya ibn Yahya said: I read to Malik from Yazid ibn Khusaifah that Sa'ib ibn Yazid informed him that he heard Sufyan ibn Abi Zuhair, may Allah be pleased with him, who was a man from the tribe of Shano'ah of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever keeps a dog that does not guard his crops or herds, then his reward is diminished by one Qirat every day. He asked: Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ? He said: Yes, by the Lord of this mosque. This is the wording of the hadith of Abu Abdullah from Abu Abdullah ibn Ya'qub."

وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ وَأَبُو نَصْرٍ الْفَقِيهُ الشِّيرَازِيُّ قَالَا ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ وَجَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَا ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ خُصَيْفَةَ أَنَّ السَّائِبَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سُفْيَانَ بْنَ أَبِي زُهَيْرٍ وَهُوَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ شَنُوءَةَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلَا ضَرْعًا نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ قَالَ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ إِي وَرَبِّ هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ

"مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلبًا لَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ زَرْعًا وَلا ضَرْعًا، نَقَصَ منْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطٌ".

"مَنِ اقْتَنى كَلْبًا إِلَّا كَلْبَ مَاشِيةٍ أَوْ ضَارِيا، نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْم قِيرَاطَان".

"مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا فَإِنَّهُ يَنْقُصُ مِنْ عَمَلِه كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قيرَاطٌ، إِلَّا كلْبَ حَرْثٍ أَوْ مَاشِيَة".
