bukhari:7149 – Muḥammad b. al-ʿAlāʾ > Abū Usāmah > Burayd > Abū Burdah > Abū Mūsá

Two men from my tribe and I entered upon the Prophet. One of the two men said to the Prophet, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Appoint me as a governor," and so did the second. The Prophet ﷺ said, "We do not assign the authority of ruling to those who ask for it, nor to those who are keen to have it."

البخاري:٧١٤٩ – حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ عَنْ بُرَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى ؓ قَالَ

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَنَا وَرَجُلاَنِ مِنْ قَوْمِي فَقَالَ أَحَدُ الرَّجُلَيْنِ أَمِّرْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَقَالَ الآخَرُ مِثْلَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّا لاَ نُوَلِّي هَذَا مَنْ سَأَلَهُ وَلاَ مَنْ حَرَصَ عَلَيْهِ

Two of my cousins and I entered the apartment of the Prophet ﷺ. One of them said: Messenger of Allah, appoint us rulers of some lands that the Almighty and Glorious God has entrusted to thy care. The other also said something similar. He said: We do not appoint to this position one who asks for it nor anyone who is covetous for the same.
