[Machine] I saw the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , when he started the prayer, he raised his hands, Sufyan said, then I came to Kufa and met Yazid, and I heard him narrating this and adding to it, then he no longer repeated it, so I thought that they had taught it to him. Sufyan said, this is what I heard Yazid narrating, then I heard him narrating it again and adding to it, and then he no longer repeated it. Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said, Sufyan went so far as to criticize Yazid in this hadith, saying that it seemed as if he had been taught this word, so he learned it and Sufyan did not mention that Yazid was good at memorizing. Abu Sa'id Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Isfarayini informed us that Abu Bar Muhamma ibn al-Hasan al-Burbahari narrated to us that Bishr ibn Musa narrated to us that Al-Humaydi narrated to us that Sufyan narrated to us that Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad in Makkah mentioned this hadith which does not have the part "then he no longer repeated it" and Sufyan said, when I came to Kufa, I heard him narrating it and he would say in it, then he no longer repeated it. So I thought they had taught it to him. Our companions said to me, his memorization has changed, or they said, it has become worse. Al-Humaydi said, we said this to the person who uses this hadith as evidence, it is only intended for the one who uses it as an argument.  

رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلَاةَ رَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ ثُمَّ قَدِمْتُ الْكُوفَةَ فَلَقِيتُ يَزِيدَ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يُحَدِّثُ بِهَذَا وَزَادَ فِيهِ ثُمَّ لَا يَعُودُ فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُمْ لَقَّنُوهُ قَالَ سُفْيَانُ هَكَذَا سَمِعْتُ يَزِيدَ يُحَدِّثُهُ ثُمَّ سَمِعْتُهُ بَعْدُ يُحَدِّثُهُ هَكَذَا وَيَزِيدُ فِيهِ ثُمَّ لَا يَعُودُ قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ وَذَهَبَ سُفْيَانُ إِلَى أَنْ يُغَلِّطَ يَزِيدَ فِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ يَقُولُ كَأَنَّهُ لُقِّنَ هَذَا الْحَرْفَ فَتَلَقَّنَهُ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يَذْكُرُ سُفْيَانُ يَزِيدَ بِالْحِفْظِ كَذَلِكَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْإِسْفِرَايِينِيُّ أنبأ أَبُو بَحْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْبَرْبَهَارِيُّ ثنا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي زِيَادٍ بِمَكَّةَ فَذَكَرَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ لَيْسَ فِيهِ ثُمَّ لَا يَعُودُ وَقَالَ سُفْيَانُ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْتُ الْكُوفَةَ سَمِعْتُهُ يُحَدِّثُ بِهِ فَيَقُولُ فِيهِ ثُمَّ لَا يَعُودُ فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُمْ لَقَّنُوهُ وَقَالَ لِي أَصْحَابُنَا إِنَّ حِفْظَهُ قَدْ تَغَيَّرَ أَوْ قَالُوا قَدْ سَاءَ قَالَ الْحُمَيْدِيُّ قُلْنَا لِقَائِلٍ هَذَا يَعْنِي لِلْمُحْتَجِّ بِهَذَا إِنَّمَا
