[Machine] I prayed behind Umar until the Fajr prayer (the dawn prayer), and he did not finish until the men with intellects thought that the sun had risen. When he finished, they said, "O Amir al-Mu'minin (Commander of the Faithful), the sun was about to rise." He spoke something that I did not understand, so I asked, "What did he say?" They replied, "He said, 'If the sun had risen, you would not find us unattentive.'"  

البيهقي:١٧٨٠أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْأَصْبَهَانِيُّ ثنا أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ ثنا سَعْدَانُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ ثنا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الْأَحْوَلِ عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيِّ قَالَ

صَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ عُمَرَ ؓ الْفَجْرَ فَمَا سَلَّمَ حَتَّى ظَنَّ الرِّجَالُ ذَوُو الْعُقُولِ أَنَّ الشَّمْسَ قَدْ طَلَعَتْ فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ قَالُوا يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كَادَتِ الشَّمْسُ تَطْلُعُ قَالَ فَتَكَلَّمَ بِشَيْءٍ لَمْ أَفْهَمْهُ فَقُلْتُ أَيَّ شَيْءٍ قَالَ فَقَالُوا قَالَ لَوْ طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ لَمْ تَجِدْنَا غَافِلِينَ
