[Machine] He punished his children by isolating them, meaning he forbid them from something. It was narrated to us by Ali ibn Abi Talib and Abdullah ibn Mas'ud that they disliked isolation. It was narrated to us by them that it is permissible.  

البيهقي:١٤٣٢٩ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ أنبأ أَبُو سَعِيدِ بْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ ثنا سَعْدَانُ بْنُ نَصْرٍ سَنَةَ سِتِّينَ وَمِائَتَيْنِ إِمْلَاءً ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْأَزْرَقُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ؓ أَنَّهُ كَانَ

يَضْرِبُ بَنِيهِ عَلَى الْعَزْلِ أَيْ يَنْهَى عَنْهُ وَرُوِّينَا عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ؓ أَنَّهُمَا كَرِهَا الْعَزْلَ وَرُوِّينَا عَنْهُمَا الْإِبَاحَةُ
