[Machine] Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us that Abu Hassan At-Taraifi and Abu Muhammad Al-Ka'bi said: Ismail ibn Qutaybah narrated to us, who narrated from Yazid ibn Salih, who narrated from Bukayr ibn Ma'roof, who narrated from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, who said: "We were informed, and Allah knows best, that the meaning of the verse {And do not make a secret appointment with them} [Al-Baqarah 235] means engaging in sexual intercourse with one's wife without her knowledge, and others said it refers to adultery, and Allah knows best. And we were also narrated from Al-Hasan that he said about secret appointment: Send to her during her 'iddah and say to her, 'I desire you and I am eager for you, and I wanted to inform you that once your 'iddah is completed, I will see your point of view.' And Ata' said, he should make a proposal without revealing his intention, saying 'I have a need, and be glad, for with the grace of Allah, you are a desirable woman.' And she would say, 'I have heard what you said.' And Ata' also said, if a man makes an appointment with a woman during her 'iddah period and then marries her afterwards, there is no need for them to be separated."
