[Machine] Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us on an expedition. When we encountered the enemy, we were defeated in the first confrontation, so we retreated to Medina during the night with a small group. Then we said, "Let us go and apologize to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So we went out and when we met him, we said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are the ones who fled." He said, "No, you are the fighters, and I am among you." Aswad ibn 'Amir said, "And I am a member of every Muslim group."  

بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ فَلَمَّا لَقِينَا الْعَدُوَّ انْهَزَمْنَا فِي أَوَّلِ عَادِيَةٍ فَقَدِمْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ فِي نَفَرٍ لَيْلًا فَاخْتَفَيْنَا ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لَوْ خَرَجْنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَاعْتَذَرْنَا إِلَيْهِ فَخَرَجْنَا فَلَمَّا لَقِينَاهُ قُلْنَا نَحْنُ الْفَرَّارُونَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ بَلْ أَنْتُمُ الْعَكَّارُونَ وَأَنَا فِئَتُكُمْ قَالَ أَسْوَدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ وَأَنَا فِئَةُ كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ
