ahmad:2988 – Ḥusayn b. Ḥasan al-Ashqar > Abū Kudaynah > ʿAṭāʾ > Abū al-Ḍuḥá > Ibn ʿAbbās

[Machine] A Jewish man passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was sitting and said, "How do you say, O Abu Al-Qasim, on the day Allah (blessed and exalted be He) will make the sky above this (pointing with his index finger), and the earth below this (pointing with his index finger), and the water below this (pointing with his index finger), and the mountains below this (pointing with his index finger), and all the rest of creation below this (pointing with his index finger)? All of this, he pointed with his finger." Allah (blessed and exalted be He) then revealed: "And they have not appraised Allah with true appraisal..." (39:67)  

أحمد:٢٩٨٨ – حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ حَسَنٍ الْأَشْقَرُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُدَيْنَةَ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

مَرَّ يَهُودِيٌّ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فَقَالَ كَيْفَ تَقُولُ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ يَوْمَ يَجْعَلُ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى السَّمَاءَ عَلَى ذِهْ وَأَشَارَ بِالسَّبَّابَةِ وَالْأَرْضَ عَلَى ذِهْ وَالْمَاءَ عَلَى ذِهْ وَالْجِبَالَ عَلَى ذِهْ وَسَائِرَ الْخَلائِقِ عَلَى ذِهْ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ يُشِيرُ بِإِصْبَعِهِ قَالَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى {وَمَا قَدَرُوا اللهَ حَقَّ قَدْرِهِ} [الزمر67] الْآيَةَ

"A Jew passed by the Prophet ﷺ, so the Prophet ﷺ said: 'O you Jew! Narrate something to us.' So he said: 'What shall you say O Abul-Qasim, when Allah places the heavens upon this, the earths upon this, the water upon this, the mountains upon this, and the rest of creation upon this?'" - Muhammad bin As-Salt, Abu Ja'far (one of the narrators) indicated first with his little finger, then followed one by one until he reached his index finger - "So Allah, the Mighty and Sublime revealed: They made not a just estimate of Allah such as is due to Him (39:67)."  

الترمذي:٣٢٤٠ – حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّلْتِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُدَيْنَةَ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

مَرَّ يَهُودِيٌّ بِالنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَا يَهُودِيُّ حَدِّثْنَا فَقَالَ كَيْفَ تَقُولُ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ إِذَا وَضَعَ اللَّهُ السَّمَوَاتِ عَلَى ذِهْ وَالأَرَضِينَ عَلَى ذِهْ وَالْمَاءَ عَلَى ذِهْ وَالْجِبَالَ عَلَى ذِهْ وَسَائِرَ الْخَلْقِ عَلَى ذِهْ وَأَشَارَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّلْتِ بِخِنْصَرِهِ أَوَّلاً ثُمَّ تَابَعَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ الإِبْهَامَ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ (وما قَدَرُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ قَدْرِهِ )  

قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ صَحِيحٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ إِلاَّ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ وَأَبُو كُدَيْنَةَ اسْمُهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ الْمُهَلَّبِ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ إِسْمَاعِيلَ رَوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شُجَاعٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الصَّلْتِ

[Machine] A Jewish man passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was sitting. He said, "How can you say, O Aba al-Qasim, that Allah will make the sky folded on His hand, and point with his index finger, and the earth on His hand, and the water on His hand, and the mountains on His hand, and all the creation on His hand? All of this indicates with His fingers." Allah, the Almighty, then revealed the verse, "They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal" (Surah Al-An'am, verse 91).
