The people of the Book used to let their hair hand down, and the polytheists used to part their hair. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ like to confirm with the People of the Book in the matters about which he had received no command. Hence he Messenger of Allah ﷺ let his forelock hang down but afterwards he parted it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4188)   

أحمد:٢٢٠٩حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عِيسَى حَدَّثَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ قَالَ أَبِي وَيَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

كَانَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ يَفْرُقُونَ رُءُوسَهُمْ وَكَانَ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ يَسْدِلُونَ قَالَ يَعْقُوبُ أَشْعَارَهُمْ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُحِبُّ وَيُعْجِبُهُ مُوَافَقَةُ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ قَالَ يَعْقُوبُ فِي بَعْضِ مَا لَمْ يُؤْمَرْ قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ فِيمَا لَمْ يُؤْمَرْ فِيهِ فَسَدَلَ نَاصِيَتَهُ ثُمَّ فَرَقَ بَعْدُ

The Prophet ﷺ used to keep his hair falling loose while the pagans used to part their hair, and the People of the Scriptures used to keep their hair falling loose, and the Prophet ﷺ liked to follow the People of the Scriptures in matters about which he had not been instructed differently, but later on the Prophet ﷺ started parting his hair.

The Prophet ﷺ used to copy the people of the Scriptures in matters in which there was no order from Allah. The people of the Scripture used to let their hair hang down while the pagans used to part their hair. So the Prophet ﷺ let his hair hang down first, but later on he parted it.

Ibn Abbas reported that the People of the Book used to let their hair fall (on their foreheads) and the polytheists used to part them on their heads, and Messenger of Allah ﷺ liked to conform his behaviour to the People of the Book in matters in which he received no command (from God) ; so Messenger of Allah ﷺ let fall his hair upon his forehead, and then he began to part it after this.

“The People of the Book used to let their hair hang down, and the idolaters used to part their hair. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ liked to be more like the People of the Book. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ let his forelock hang down, then after that he parted it.”
