[Machine] Umar passed by Hassaan while he was reciting poetry in the mosque. Umar asked, "Are you reciting poetry in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" Hassaan replied, "I used to recite poetry in it, and there were those who were better than me. Or I used to recite poetry in it, and there were those who were better than me."  

أحمد:٢١٩٣٧ – حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ

مَرَّ عُمَرُ عَلَى حَسَّانَ وَهُوَ يُنْشِدُ الشِّعْرَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ فِي مَسْجِدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ تُنْشِدُ الشِّعْرَ؟ قَالَ قَدْ كُنْتُ أُنْشِدُ وَفِيهِ مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ أَوْ كُنْتُ أُنْشِدُ فِيهِ وَفِيهِ مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ

Umar passed by Hassan when he was reciting verses in the mosque. He looked at him. Thereupon he said: I used to recite verses when there was present in it the one who was better than you (i.e. the Prophet).  

أبو داود:٥٠١٣ – حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي خَلَفٍ وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ الْمَعْنَى قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ

مَرَّ عُمَرُ بِحَسَّانَ وَهُوَ يُنْشِدُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَلَحَظَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ قَدْ كُنْتُ أُنْشِدُ وَفِيهِ مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ

[Machine] Umar passed by Hassan while he was reciting in the mosque, so Umar asked him, "What are you reciting?" Hassan replied, "I was reciting about who is better than you." Umar then left, knowing that he was seeking the approval of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .  

أحمد:٢١٩٣٨ – حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كَامِلٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ شِهَابٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ قَالَ

مَرَّ عُمَرُ عَلَى حَسَّانَ وَهُوَ يُنْشِدُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ مَهْ قَالَ لَهُ حَسَّانُ قَدْ كُنْتُ أُنْشِدُ مَنْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ قَالَ فَانْصَرَفَ عُمَرُ وَهُوَ يَعْرِفُ أَنَّهُ يُرِيدُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ
