[Machine] And he placed his crown, then he came to the lamp, and he took out its wick. He also took out a piece of cloth, opened it, and poured some of it in the lamp. Then he returned and said, "I stood up while I am Umar ibn Abdul Aziz, and I returned while I am Umar ibn Abdul Aziz."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٧٢١حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو صَالِحٍ الْحَكَمُ بْنُ مُوسَى حَدَّثَنَا ضَمْرَةُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ قَالَ عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عُمَرَ قَالَ لِي رَجَاءُ بْنُ حَيْوَةَ مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا أَكْمَلَ عَقْلًا مِنْ أَبِيكَ قَالَ سَهِرْتُ مَعَهُ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فَغَشَّى السِّرَاجُ فَقَالَ لِي يَا رَجَاءُ إِنَّ السِّرَاجَ قَدْ غَشَّى قَالَ وَوَصِيفٌ نَائِمٌ إِلَى جَانِبِنَا قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فَأُنَبِّهُ الْوَصِيفَ؟ قَالَ قَدْ نَامَ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فَأَقُومُ أَنَا فَأُصْلِحُهُ؟ قَالَ لَيْسَ مِنْ مُرُوءَةِ الرَّجُلِ اسْتِخْدَامُ ضَيْفِهِ قَالَ

وَوَضَعَ تَاجَهُ فَأَتَى السِّرَاجَ فَأَخْرَجَ فَتِيلَتَهُ وَأَخْرَجَ بَطَّةً فَفَتَحَهَا وَصَبَّ فِي السِّرَاجِ مِنْهَا ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَقَالَ «قُمْتُ وَأَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ وَرَجَعْتُ وَأَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ»
