ahmad-zuhd:1673ʿAbdullāh from my father > Hāshim b. al-Qāsim > Abū Saʿīd > Mālik b. Mighwal > Muʿāwiyah b. Qurrah > Jalas And a man from al-Tābiʿīn Fatadhākarā > Aḥaduhumā Innī Lā Arjū Waʾakhāf

[Machine] "The other person is the one who hopes for something and asks for it, and indeed, the one who fears something escapes from it. And I do not consider a person to hope for something that they do not seek. I do not consider a person to fear something that they do not run away from."  

الزهد لأحمد:١٦٧٣حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ مِغْوَلٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ قُرَّةَ أَنَّهُ جَلَسَ وَرَجُلٌ مِنَ التَّابِعِينَ فَتَذَاكَرَا قَالَ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا إِنِّي لَا أَرْجُو وَأَخَافُ فَقَالَ

الْآخَرُ «مَنْ رَجَا شَيْئًا طَلَبَهُ وَإِنَّهُ مَنْ خَافَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ هَرَبَ مِنْهُ وَمَا أَحْسَبُ امْرَأً يَرْجُو شَيْئًا لَا يَطْلُبُهُ مَا أَحْسبُ امْرَأً يَخَافُ شَيْئًا لَا يَهْرُبُ مِنْهُ»
