I heard al-Bara’ ᴿᴬ say: When the fasting of Ramadan was prescribed, they would not go near women for the whole of Ramadan, and some men would betray themselves. So Allah revealed: “Allah knows that you used to betray yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and pardoned you.” (Baqarah 2:187)

البخاري:٤٥٠٨حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ وَحَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ حَدَّثَنَا شُرَيْحُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ الْبَرَاءَ ؓ يَقُولُ: لَمَّا نَزَلَ صَوْمُ رَمَضَانَ، كَانُوا لَا يَقْرَبُونَ النِّسَاءَ رَمَضَانَ كُلَّهُ، وَكَانَ رِجَالٌ يَخُونُونَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ:{عَلِمَ اللَّهُ أَنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ تَخْتَانُونَ أَنْفُسَكُمْ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَفَا عَنْكُمْ}
