[Machine] Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prepared for battle, intending to go to Sham (Syria). He gave permission to the people to go out and commanded them to do so during the intense heat of the autumn nights. Many people hesitated, fearing the Romans. The people of Hisbah (a group responsible for enforcing Islamic law) went out, while the hypocrites lagged behind and told themselves that he (the Messenger of Allah) would never return. They discouraged those who obeyed them from joining him, and some men from the Muslims stayed behind due to legitimate excuses. The narrator mentioned the story and said that Jadd ibn Qays came to him while he was sitting in the mosque with a group of people. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, give me permission to stay behind, as I have debts and ailments which are valid excuses." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Prepare yourself, for you are capable. Perhaps you will help some of the daughters of Al-Asfar (a tribe)." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, give me permission but do not tempt me with the daughters of Al-Asfar." Then Allah revealed regarding him and his companions, "And among them is he who says, 'Grant me permission [to be exempted from the fighting] and put me not into trial.' Unquestionably, they have fallen into trial. And indeed, Hell surrounds the disbelievers." (Quran, 9:49) It consisted of ten consecutive verses. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out with the believers, and among those who stayed behind was Ibn Anamah or Anamah from the Banu Amr ibn Awf tribe. It was said to him, "What prevented you from joining the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He said, "Idle talk and playing." Then Allah revealed regarding him and those who lagged behind from the hypocrites, "And if you ask them, they will surely say, 'We were only conversing and playing.' Say, 'Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?'" (Quran, 9:65) It consisted of three consecutive verses.
