Asking the Prophet ﷺ about faith

ahmad:375 – Abū Aḥmad > Sufyān > ʿAlqamah b. Marthad > Sulaymān b. Buraydah > Ibn Yaʿmar > Ibn ʿUmar

[AI] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, may I come closer?" He said, "Come closer." So he came a little closer. Then he said, "O Messenger of Allah, may I come closer?" He said, "Come closer." So he came a little closer. Then he said, "O Messenger of Allah, may I come closer?" He said, "Come closer." So he came a little closer, until his knees were about to touch the knee of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is faith?" Then he mentioned its meaning.

أحمد:٣٧٥ – حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ مَرْثَدٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ يَعْمَرَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ أَوْ سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ إِنَّا نَسِيرُ فِي هَذِهِ الْأَرْضِ فَنَلْقَى قَوْمًا يَقُولُونَ لَا قَدَرَ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ إِذَا لَقِيتَ أُولَئِكَ فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ مِنْهُمْ بَرِيءٌ وَهُمْ مِنْهُ بُرَآءُ قَالَهَا ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ أَنْشَأَ يُحَدِّثُنَا قَالَ

بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَدْنُو؟ فَقَالَ: «ادْنُهْ». فَدَنَا رَتْوَةً، ثُمَّ قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَدْنُو؟ فَقَالَ: «ادْنُهْ». فَدَنَا رَتْوَةً، ثُمَّ قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَدْنُو؟ فَقَالَ: «ادْنُهْ». فَدَنَا رَتْوَةً، حَتَّى كَادَتْ أَنْ تَمَسَّ رُكْبَتَاهُ رُكْبَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مَا الْإِيمَانُ؟ فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ.
